Color Trends :: Olive Green

I’ve been thinking adding a contributor for along time, but it wasn’t until I met Megan Bachmann that I decided to do it. Megan is a mother and has a great sense of style and aesthetic. She has a background in fashion, passion for interior design and writes her own blog, Otomi Home. I’m thrilled to welcome Megan to Simplified Bee!

Thank you Cristin for the sweet introduction. I am so excited about olive green as an upcoming color trend for 2015. Elle Decor recently did a feature on up & coming colors and I’m particularly excited about this one. Olive green is so lovely in interiors because it borders between being a neutral and a color, depending on how you use it. It can be bold or subtle, modern or traditional. It looks amazing paired with a multitude of colors include white, black, navy, orange, and turquoise. And of course it looks incredible paired with brass accents. Olive green just feels new again. Here are some inspiring rooms using olive green…

The olive green walls and velvet sofa feel luxurious and moody in this room in Barnaba Fornasetti’s residence in Milan.

The olive green walls and upholstered ottoman are totally on point in this room from domino.domino olive green ottoman(source)

An old standby room, also from domino, the olive green curtains act as a neutral and help to keep the turquoise painted room sophisticated.domino olive green(source)

And last but not least, Jenny Komenda from the Little Green Notebook, recently designed a bathroom in olive green which looks amazing paired with those brass and black accents.jenny komenda olive green bathroom(source)

As you can see, there is good reason to have olive green on your radar for design trends in the next year. You can read about another color design trend at Otomi Home today, Glossy Blue!

Beautiful Southern California Home Tour

It’s a new week and I’m thrilled to be sharing a beautiful project by Corona del Mar, California-based interior designer, Ohara Davies-Gaetano. The emerging designer (recently published in Veranda) helped a family remodel and settle into their new Newport Beach home (downsizing from their previous one in Virginia). Ohara created an inviting, comfortable, yet elegant space reflective of her clients’ casual lifestyle. She also wanted a very open feeling where all areas of the house seamlessly flow into the next. Because the home was much smaller than what the owners were used to, each room had to serve its purpose and be functional. European antiques found throughout the home add small but elegant touches, which epitomize Ohara’s passion for mixing a little old with the new. I also love how her design  embraces the gorgeous light, landscape and outdoor living Southern California is known for.

Holiday House Hamptons 2014 :: My Faves

Earlier this summer, Holiday House Hamptons at Watchcase in Sag Harbor opened its doors to the public. Showcasing eighteen talented interior designers, the prestigious design showhouse combines two of founder, Iris Dankner’s passions: interior design and fundraising for breast cancer research. This year Holiday House partnered with Hamptons Cottages and Gardens (HC&G) to deliver an inspiring design house which is actually a 19th century brick factory that’s now being converted into luxury condos. The grand industrial space set the stage for each designer to create a space themed around a holiday or special moment in their life. Here’s a look at some of my favorite spaces.

Bold & Bright :: Miami Beach Apartment Tour

Recently House Beautiful toured the colorful Miami Beach apartment of interior designer, Robert Passal (loved his master bedroom for the Hampton Designer Showhouse in 2012). The mix of modern and traditional used throughout is a personal fave as well as the classic blue and white color palette that flows in both indoors and out. Passal is a master at combining pattern, texture and color. Take a look and I think you’ll agree!

To get just the right watery effect, he even paints the door in a bright blue car paint. What? yep.

Love the combo of pattern and color in this image. The Louis XVI–style chair upholstered in an African batik fabric looks amazing paired with the stunning swirl painting by Henrique Oliveira.

Love the clean, modern lines in the kitchen and the pops of bright color.

Passal mixes artwork and accessories beautifully here in the apartment’s entry and creates a fun, unexpected work area. The modern Tom Dixon chair is a personal fave!

In this bedroom, Passal covers the walls in a traditional blue and white toile, features an elegant blue velvet bed and adds a fun green accent with bed linens.

In the bathroom, square marble tiles cover both the walls and floor. Love the painting hung above the tub. So daring!

Quadrille Nomad drapery // Miami Beach Apartment // Robert Passal

In the master bedroom, matchstick blinds are layered with ceiling to floor panel drapery in Quadrille’s Nomad pattern. They frame the sliding door beautifully.

Covered in gorgeous shimmery blue fabric, this powder room is a head turner.

And last, but not least, the outdoor patio which features traditional teak seating with blue and white cushions. It’s paired with a modern white Saarinen table by Knoll. Love!

I’m also thrilled to be over at Erin’s House of Turquoise today talking about my playroom + guest bedroom design project. More beautiful bright color!

happy decorating,

cristin
