Disaster Preparedness – Home & Life Binder

When disaster strikes, it can be horrible. But, being unprepared can be devastating. One way to organize for an emergency is to create a Home & Life Binder. I highly recommend it to all my client’s seeking organizational assistance.

The binder holds the most critical information for your home and family. It should be kept in a safe, yet handy place. Assuming you have a computer and printer, creating the binder is a fairly easy DIY project – here’s how step-by-step:

Materials Needed:
One 1-2 inch three-ring binder, index divider tabs (at least seven), three hole punch

Divider Categories and Suggested Content:
1. Emergency Contacts – family members full names & DOB, pets, contact name, phone numbers and email addresses for neighbors, relatives, caregivers, local hospitals, fire station, local police department, work and schools. copies of social security cards and driver’s license.

2. Home Statistics – address, cross street, county, neighborhood, realtor, square footage (inside & out), year built, # of bedrooms, bathrooms, appliances (date purchased), cooling & heating features, home maintenance list (plumber, electrician, roofer, etc.), ulitity providers (gas, water, electric, trash, phone, internet, cable)

3. Home Inventory – list articles with descriptions, serial #s, purchase date, cost and value. attach receipts, appraisals, warranties. include photos of valuable artwork, antiques, jewelry, etc.

4. Health – contact information for all doctors, pharmacies, medical insurance (company, policy #, website & login)

5. Legal – wills, trusts, power of attorney, life insurance policies (company, policy #, representative contact information, website & login/password, coverage), deeds, titles.

6. Financial – banking, auto and home insurance, credit cards & brokerage accounts (company, policy #, representative contact information, 800 #s, website & login/password)

7. Emergency Plan – mapped out meeting spot, instructions on how to turn off your water, electricity, and gas. communication plan (out of state contact that can be a communication point if local communications are inoperable), location of emergency kit (advanced first aid kit, extra clothing and shoes, flashlights and batteries, water and non-perishable food for three days, cash, a solar and battery-operated radio). If you are not the DIY type or need some motivation, here’s a comprehensive organizing binder called Life.doc by Buttoned Up.

The Life.doc Binder has eight sections including:

•Legal
•Caregiver Information

•Dollars & Sense
•Emergency Plan
•Home Sweet Home

You can fill out the Life.doc pages by hand, or use the included CD Rom to do the data entry on your computer, then feed the Life.doc pages into your printer and print out the completed forms. The Life.doc Binder can be purchased at see Jane work.

This is a project that is frankly not fun to do, but will make you happy and at peace once you are finished!

Stylish Personalized Storage for Toys & More

Toys, toys, toys. We have a lot in our home. Most are dolls with all the super small accessories, puzzles of all sizes and princess dress-up clothing. I am constantly working to keep it all organized. Therefore, we have a house rule that if something comes in, something must go out and be donated. So cute! Love the pail for storing crayons or other art supplies. A series of bins would be great for organizing dress-up clothing and accessories. The large oval tub would be perfect way to show off all those stuff animals neatly.

Lovely. Here are several patterns that would look great in a little girl’s blue & pink bedroom. I’m curious to find out which one my client will like best. My favorites are the Blue & White Harlequin (middle top) and Chain Link Pool (bottom left) designs.

I love how the MacBeth Collection offers monogram and icon options. Such a great way to further personalize one’s space. I am going to recommend that my client monograms her daughter’s storage accessories, but any of the four icons above would work stylishly too. Isn’t that seahorse darling?

Snail Mail Organization With Style

Clutter is visually exhausting. The biggest clutter issue for many of my clients is paper. Piles and piles of paper create a negative atmosphere in any space and can become overwhelming.

Be Eco-Friendly and Reduce Your Mail
Want to reduce the amount of mail you receive? Save paper, time and postage by paying bills online. It also will help you keep track of the bills. It’s easy, it’s efficient, and it’s earth-friendly.
I hate junk mail. There are several great resources available to help you reduce unwanted junk mail. Save a tree and check out, Catalog Choice, Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, or TreeHugger.
Tackling the Mail – Simple Tips & Getting Stylishly Organized
Set-up a “one-stop-sorting” workstation for all incoming mail. Make sure you have a surface you can work on. The kitchen counter works for me! The station should include a small file holder or box, a letter-opener, pair of scissors and— a must— recycling bin, shredder or waste basket close at hand.

Use your designated sorting station daily to tackle incoming mail. First and right away, recycle or toss all junk mail, catalogs, or unwanted promotions. Shred any mail that might contain personal information (SS#, phone #s, medical record #s, etc.). Second, file all mail you need to save. Here are some suggested categories:
• To Pay – bills to be paid
• To Act – rsvp to an event, make a call, etc.
• To File – papers to be filed in your main home filing system (i.e. bank or insurance statements, etc.)• To Read – magazine or catalog
And of course, you need to store all that paper in some pretty little file folders. Here are some of my favorites:

Now go tackle that pile of mail with a sense of style.
