Book Review & Giveaway :: The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas

Recently I received a copy of Country Living’s The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas. Indeed it’s a little square book measuring only 7 x 7 inches, but don’t let the size fool you. This pint sized edition is loaded with big inspiration. It features a hand-picked collection of the magazine’s best advice (and how to instruction) on ways to organize, decorate or add a personal touch to your space. There’s even a chapter for gardeners giving smart secrets for growing lush, abundant landscapes. This book would make a fabulous house warming gift!

Simple Style: DIY Tray Makeovers

manuel_canovas-trellis-wallpaper-vert
As I mentioned on Facebook, I recently wallpapered our kitchen nook. Loving it! The space isn’t 100 done {still needs window treatments}, so I am holding off sharing the final reveal until then. But, I wanted to share with you a very simple tray makeover I did to hold the kids homework supplies.

With a remnant piece of wallpaper {Treillis by Manuel Canovas}, scissors, spray adhesive and some high-gloss white paint, I transformed a yard sale find, black painted wooden tray. Now it’s fresh, chic and makes a great homework station.

Here are a few more of my favorite DIY tray makeovers…

My friend Kate from Centsational Girl used a little Jonathan Adler fabric {originally a Mykonos placemat} to line a gray lacquer tray from West Elm. The result is just fabulous, don’t you think?

Found on SweetHome, here’s another tray that has been transformed using a little paint and decorative paper. So sweet.

martha-stewart-diy-chevron-trayUsing a standard baker’s tray and bold chevron fabric, Martha Stewart’s decorating editor Rebecca Robertson, makes a real statement. So chic! Find the tutorial at Martha Stewart.

Felt is another great way to dress up a tray. Using a silverware or utensil tray, simply line the inset areas with felt. I found this great idea on Apartment Therapy.
If you have seen other fun tray makeovers or have done one yourself, please share them with us on Facebook!

DIY Ribbon Chandelier in Shades of Purple

This spring we have hosted several family celebrations. One was for my daughter. She requested the event be “purple.” Originally I was going to add pops of black into the color scheme, but my Mom said it would look too harsh. I agreed and instead mixed shades of purple. The result was feminine, fresh and fun.

To capture the moment, I hired Jennifer Jacobson Photography. She took all of the images in the collage above. I think she did an amazing job!

Martha Stewart’s ribbon chandelier was my inspiration and starting point for decorating the party’s main table.

diy ribbon chandelier how to

To make the ribbon “chandelier”, I first wrapped lavender satin ribbon around a 12-inch wreath form to cover the surface of the form. Using three colors of satin ribbon – lavender, purple and white – I cut lengths of about 16 inches. Then I created a pattern by knotting cut pieces of ribbon around the wreath at their midpoints.

The ribbon “chandelier” was hung using three smaller cut lavender ribbons and tied to my dining room’s chandelier. I love the whimsical touch and the way it pulled the color scheme together.

Next I will share the floral arrangements and block print tablecloth made for the party!

Wishing you a great weekend!
