Hello 2017! With the new year brings new resolutions. One goal that may top your list is organizing your home. However, this can be easier said than done! Cleaning closets, organizing the entry, and clearing the clutter takes planning, time and motivation. In the spirit of getting organized in 2017, I’m sharing 5 simple ways to get organized.
ONE :: HOOKS simple entry with hooks and bench

Entryways are a dumping ground for coats, shoes and bags. Make the space more orderly with wall hooks to hang items. I love this example by Coco.Kelley.

TWO :: BASKETS organized linen closet with baskets

Linen closets can get messy quickly if they are not planned out. I recommend baskets with tags to keep the space well organized. Here Ballard Designs uses chic woven baskets house toilet paper and bedding.

THREE :: PIN BOARDS cork wall // home office

I’m a huge fan of pin boards to keep important papers organized and top of mind. This cork wall is not only a great way to keep announcements, invites and important documents organized, it’s a decor statement. Love!

FOUR :: CLEAR STORAGE

Acrylic storage is a favorite of mine for obvious reasons – you can see everything inside saving so much time. I love this example of acrylic drawer front for a closet I spotted on My Domaine.

FIVE :: TRAYS

I love trays for organizing. I use them throughout the house to corral items. Above are two examples of how I use trays in my own home. The first is a ceramic tray to house bathroom essentials and the second is a simple wooden tray to keep oils, spices and other kitchen items organized beautifully.

One Room Challenge :: Master Bathroom and Closet Reveal

Today’s the day – the One Room Challenge reveal. I can’t believe how quickly the last six weeks have flown by. There have been ups and downs along the way, but I’m so excited to share my new Master Bathroom and Walk-in Closet with you. It was a definitely a bigger challenge than the Foyer I designed last fall, but in the end I’m so glad that I selected this space. It’s my now my new favorite place in our home. Serene. Chic. Functional. Love, love, love it.

I’m over-the-moon with the result. The mosaic marble tile floor was a starting point of the whole design. I went with my gut to do a larger pattern on the floor and I’m so pleased. To counter the heavy pattern the walls, the main vanity and trim were all painted in Farrow & Ball’s Strong White. It’s perfect neutral white for all the gray tones throughout the space.

I was instantly drawn to Kamala Nahas’ Liquid Amber artwork from minted.com. The black and white photograph of a single leaf was simple, yet striking. I hung it over a double towel rack with personalized towels.

I designed the double sink vanity to have modern, clean lines. The polished chrome square ring pulls are a mid-century modern touch that I love. A pair of rectangle under-mount sinks by Kohler (Lowes) are paired with polished chrome faucets and a beautiful Calcutta marble top.

A handsome trio of bath accessories from Waterworks are placed on a black and white boudoir tray. I love the mix of material here!

I’m not a fan of matchy matchy finishes. In the bathroom, I mixed a variety of metals including brass and polished chrome. Here is a detail of Crytorama’s glass torch wall sconce flanking the brass vanity mirrors. Loving it!

The marble shower features two shower heads, a marble seat and a steam unit by Mr. Steam. The lucite door handle by LuxHoldUps is my favorite detail. It’s generous in size and adds that chic touch that I was looking for.

The water closet is super whimsical. The Woods & Pears wallpaper by Cole & Son (DecoratorsBest) sets a dramatic tone. The Roman Shade in Caroline Cecil Textiles‘ Ink Stripe is a fun play on pattern. The round mirror with leather strap (Joss & Main) adds another play on pattern and more natural light to the space. The flush mount ceiling fixture (Crystorama) and painted ceiling in Farrow & Ball’s Worsted is another little element of surprise.

My closets in the bathroom were lined in Farrow & Ball’s Bumblebee Wallpaper 586 – it’s a grayish pink and a nod to the pink in the original bathroom. I had to incorporate a bee motif somewhere! I’m also thrilled with the rolling laundry basket (Joss & Main) and the chic stool (AllModern).

For an additional modern touch, I selected a glass & brass sputnik flush mount fixture (Lucent Light Shop) to hang above the make-up vanity. Love it!

The make-up vanity is my special little space in the bathroom. Isn’t it pretty? In addition to the stool, I incorporated lots of girly touches like the lucite and polished chrome pulls, round marble tray by waterworks for my perfume and a bronze standing mirror by Arteriors (Bellacor). The top of the vanity is also papered in the same Bumblebee wallpaper as the closets and covered with clear glass. The window is also treated with a Roman shade in Caroline Cecil Textiles.

My husband’s walk-in closet was quite a transformation too! The new space features a playful Great Wave wallpaper by Cole & Son (DecoratorsBest), a handsome rope mirror (Bassett Mirror Co) and a stately brass semi-mount light fixture (Crystorama).

I also incorporated some super stylish storage pieces including a beautiful marble box (Bellacor), rattan laundry basket (Waterworks) and beach house bins that line the shelves.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to have this project completed. The process certainly had its ups and downs. It would have never happened without the support of Linda (the founder of the One Room Challenge), the generosity of my sponsors and all of sub-contractors that maneuvered schedules to make it happen. One Room Challenge :: Week 2

It’s week two of the One Room Challenge and today I’m sharing what inspired the design for my master bathroom + walk-in closet and the demolition process. Let’s start with the master bath. The space (as you can see from the before images) is a long and narrow – approximately 7.5′ x 24′. The original 1940s bathroom was enlarged and remodeled in the 50s and featured beautiful metallic silver and pink wallpaper. Closets, a double vanity and makeup vanity were added in the process. At first I wanted to removed the closets and add a free standing tub at the far end of the bathroom, but after living in the space I grew to love functionality, storage and high-quality. In the end, I decided to keep the footprint as is and focus on new flooring (the wall-to-wall carpet had to go!), fixtures and finishes (I was a little sad to see that the pink wallpaper had to go).

As for the look and feel of the master bathroom, I wanted the space to feel contemporary, yet timeless. As you know, I love the hexagon and really wanted to incorporate the a hex or octagonal pattern somewhere. This tile floor in a bathroom by Grant Gibson (below) served as inspiration. I love the chunky marble bench seat too!

This bathroom designed by Laura Tutun also has a look and feel I love. The clean lined vanity with large square pulls are the best!

Once I had a vision in mind, I started sourcing for the bathroom. Here are a few items that caught my eye at first glance:

The bones of my husband’s walk-in closet are pretty good. There are a couple tweaks including adding some upper shelving in lieu of a second clothing rack.

As for the look and feel, I had a good idea what I wanted from the start. We used a neutral wave pattern wallpaper by Cole and Son (available through ORC sponsor, DecoratorsBest) in our last closet and loved it so much I’m using it again. It has a wonderful calming effect that my husband loves and it’s a great starting point for the overall design.

Now onto demolition. Because we have an older 1940s home, several materials (plaster walls, tile, etc) were tested for asbestos and lead before we started the demo process. It’s always best to know what you are dealing with ahead of time for the safety of you and your contract workers. The bathroom’s vintage pink tile was tested and it came back positive for low levels of lead. The lead is actually found in the glaze of the tile and isn’t harmful until it’s disturbed. Therefore, the demo had to be done with special precautions including wearing a toxic barrier respirator, using a HEPA filter vac and covering over vents and doorways to keep dust from contaminating other areas. If you are thinking of having an older home renovated, consult with environmental inspection & control company first. If you do have hazardous materials that need to be removed, they can recommend specialized abatement companies in your area to do the work.

Once the carpet was removed in the master bathroom we discovered that there was an additional sub-floor that once had linoleum over it. Linoleum floors produced in the 1950s commonly used an adhesive on the back side that contains asbestos. Because we didn’t know what the gray paper material consisted of (see image below), so we had it tested. In a matter of a few hours, I received a call from the environmental inspection company that surprising the material came back negative for asbestos and we could move on safely. Whew! We dodged a bullet that would have set us back a few days.

One Room Challenge Spring 2016 :: Kick-Off

As some of you know, I moved last year to a house that needs a ton of work. It’s a 1940s traditional colonial style home and last fall I redesigned the foyer and staircase for the One Room Challenge (ORC). As an interior designer, I enjoyed the process from inspiration to completion – but of course I’m my toughest client, so it wasn’t always easy, breezy!

Recently, Linda of Calling it Home invited me back to participate in her One Room Challenge this spring. For those who may not know, the ORC is a collection of 20 bloggers that document the transformation of a room over the course of six weeks. Although the tight timeline adds a lot of pressure, I jumped at the chance to be part of this fabulous series again.

Even though our house has seemingly endless makeover needs including the kitchen, bathrooms and backyard patio, the room choice for the ORC was quite obvious – our master bathroom & walk-in closet. We selected the space mainly because we were battling several leaky faucets that couldn’t be repaired (too old) and our closets needed some serious organizational help. It’s a big undertaking for such a short amount of time, but I was up for the challenge!

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be sharing my design process from inspiration to finishing touches. Each Wednesday, there will be a new blog post revealing the progress and you can also get sneak peeks via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I hope you will follow my journey!
