One Room Challenge :: Master Bathroom and Closet Reveal

master bathroom // @simplifiedbee // #oneroomchallenge

Today’s the day – the One Room Challenge reveal. I can’t believe how quickly the last six weeks have flown by. There have been ups and downs along the way, but I’m so excited to share my new Master Bathroom and Walk-in Closet with you. It was a definitely a bigger challenge than the Foyer I designed last fall, but in the end I’m so glad that I selected this space. It’s my now my new favorite place in our home. Serene. Chic. Functional. Love, love, love it.

In case you are just joining and seeing this all for the first time, here are links to the first five weeks of my One Room Challenge this spring:

Week One (before) // Week 2 (inspiration & demo)

Week 3 (paint & wallpaper) // Week 4 (lighting, hardware & textiles)

Week 5 (accessories)

Also to refresh your memory and to appreciate the dramatic transformation, I’ve included a few before images in combination with the new images.

I’m over-the-moon with the result. The mosaic marble tile floor was a starting point of the whole design. I went with my gut to do a larger pattern on the floor and I’m so pleased. To counter the heavy pattern the walls, the main vanity and trim were all painted in Farrow & Ball’s Strong White. It’s perfect neutral white for all the gray tones throughout the space.

I was instantly drawn to Kamala Nahas’ Liquid Amber artwork from minted.com. The black and white photograph of a single leaf was simple, yet striking. I hung it over a double towel rack with personalized towels.

I designed the double sink vanity to have modern, clean lines. The polished chrome square ring pulls are a mid-century modern touch that I love. A pair of rectangle under-mount sinks by Kohler (Lowes) are paired with polished chrome faucets and a beautiful Calcutta marble top.

A handsome trio of bath accessories from Waterworks are placed on a black and white boudoir tray. I love the mix of material here!

I’m not a fan of matchy matchy finishes. In the bathroom, I mixed a variety of metals including brass and polished chrome.  Here is a detail of Crytorama’s glass torch wall sconce flanking the brass vanity mirrors. Loving it!

The marble shower features two shower heads, a marble seat and a steam unit by Mr. Steam. The lucite door handle by LuxHoldUps is my favorite detail. It’s generous in size and adds that chic touch that I was looking for.

The water closet is super whimsical. The Woods & Pears wallpaper by Cole & Son (DecoratorsBest) sets a dramatic tone. The Roman Shade in Caroline Cecil Textiles‘ Ink Stripe is a fun play on pattern. The round mirror with leather strap (Joss & Main) adds another play on pattern and more natural light to the space. The flush mount ceiling fixture (Crystorama) and painted ceiling in Farrow & Ball’s Worsted is another little element of surprise.

My closets in the bathroom were lined in Farrow & Ball’s Bumblebee Wallpaper 586 – it’s a grayish pink and a nod to the pink in the original bathroom. I had to incorporate a bee motif somewhere! I’m also thrilled with the rolling laundry basket (Joss & Main) and the chic stool (AllModern).

For an additional modern touch, I selected a glass & brass sputnik flush mount fixture (Lucent Light Shop) to hang above the make-up vanity. Love it!

The make-up vanity is my special little space in the bathroom. Isn’t it pretty? In addition to the stool, I incorporated lots of girly touches like the lucite and polished chrome pulls, round marble tray by waterworks for my perfume and a bronze standing mirror by Arteriors (Bellacor). The top of the vanity is also papered in the same Bumblebee wallpaper as the closets and covered with clear glass. The window is also treated with a Roman shade in Caroline Cecil Textiles.

My husband’s walk-in closet was quite a transformation too! The new space features a playful Great Wave wallpaper by Cole & Son (DecoratorsBest), a handsome rope mirror (Bassett Mirror Co) and a stately brass semi-mount light fixture (Crystorama).

I also incorporated some super stylish storage pieces including a beautiful marble box (Bellacor), rattan laundry basket (Waterworks) and beach house bins that line the shelves.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to have this project completed. The process certainly had its ups and downs. It would have never happened without the support of Linda (the founder of the One Room Challenge), the generosity of my sponsors and all of sub-contractors that maneuvered schedules to make it happen. A huge thank you!!!

One Room Challenge :: Week 5

My master bathroom and walk-in closet renovation for the One Room Challenge got very stressful last week. Nothing about the shower door installation was easy. First, I was told on the day of the scheduled install that they got one of the panel measurements wrong and that the hole for the handle was done in error – so they weren’t able to install that day. A week went by and I was told the new glass was on its way. When the replacement glass arrived last Friday, one of the panels was the wrong thickness and the hardware wasn’t in the right finish. At this point in time with the challenge, I couldn’t wait another week for the right materials. I made the decision to have the guys go ahead and install for the photo shoot, but that it would have to be corrected. Here is an image of the flooring before the shower door was installed. I’m loving the transition from the bigger octagon mosaic floor to the smaller marble hex tile shower floor.

Last week wasn’t all that bad though because lots of the fun details were installed. One of my favorite was a pair of Roman shades by The Shade Store in Ink Stripe organic cotton canvas by Caroline Cecil Textiles. They are stunning! The canvas has a really nice weight to it that works well for window treatments. The image below captures one of the shades that was hung in the water closet. I love the play on pattern here.

The round mirror with leather strap was sourced through Joss & Main (another fabulous ORC sponsor with fabulous prices!). I selected a smaller scale round mirror as an accent to break up all of the horizontal and vertical lines in the space. I love that it reflects more natural light into the bathroom.

Adorne by Legrand // pop-out outlet // @simplifiedbee

Also a highlight was the install of some very stylish light switches and outlets by adorn legrand. This pop-out outlet was a favorite included in my product review last week. It’s a small detail, but design is all about the the details?

I also wanted to share some of the other smaller details for this space. Here’s a few of the beautiful bathroom accessories I selected:

4 keaton wall mirror // 5 rolling laundry bin // 6 black edge boudoir tray

Here’s a peek at the make-up vanity with new lucite & chrome pulls from LuxHoldups and the faux lamb cross stool from AllModern.com (a favorite source for modern furnishings and an ORC sponsor). I LOVE this stool and so do my daughters!

For my husband’s walk-in closet, I selected a nautical rope mirror from Bassett Mirror Company (one of our fab ORC sponsors) for several reasons; one, I thought it had a masculine quality that he would like (and he does!), two, because it would add more light in the space, and three, it compliments the Cole & Sons Wave wallpaper.

Also for the walk-in closet, I selected a beautiful marble box with a wood lid from Bellacor (a returning ORC sponsor that offers over 500,000 home decor products). It delivers both organization and style – which of course I love! The box is just the right size for my hubby to place his wallet, phone and keys in. The marble and wood combination is so chic too!

Next week is the final reveal! I can’t wait to share with you our new bathroom and walk-in closet. I’m over-the-moon with how it’s pulling all together! Meanwhile, be sure to follow along on Instagram where I’m sharing more images! Just in case you are just joining this series, here are links to the first four weeks of the One Room Challenge:

Be sure to also check out the progress of the other 19 ORC participants! I’m blown away by the talent…

Bathroom Accessory Tips from Waterworks

The right artwork, mirror or throw pillow can elevate the style of a room.  Home décor accessories are often forgotten and can be easily overdone. Striking the right balance is key.
Accessories are important design elements in any space and this of course includes powder and bathrooms. If you are struggling to finish off your bathroom with just the right accessories, you are in luck.

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Barbara Sallick, the Co-Founder and Senior Vice President of Design of Waterworks. In 1978, Barbara and her husband, Robert founded the luxury bath company which is known for craftsmanship and artisanal designs. I am excited to have her share tips on accessorizing the bathroom in style.
luxury linen bath towels
Simplified Bee: What are some new materials being used in bathroom accessories?

Barbara Sallick: I love natural linen – a material that has long been a tradition in the European bath, but is not as popular in the U.S. Linen is durable and only grows softer and more absorbent with age—many are surprised that it’s more absorbent than cotton. This fall we are launching many natural linens that are hand loomed and quite lovely. From elegant guest towels to crocheted bath mats to richly textured shower curtains.
purple resin bath accessories
I have not seen new materials for the bath recently.  However, resin continues to be a great material for the bath.  It is heat and water resistant, is available in great colors (I love our new fall color, purple) and very easy to keep clean.  Resin lends itself to clean modern shapes and is at home in any space.
I also love ceramic accessories for the bath. Here is an opportunity to search for great vintage pieces such as soap dishes, toothbrush holders repurposed as containers for jewelry and waste bins often the output of old English ceramics factories. But there are wonderful new handmade ceramics that add that personal touch as well.  Our new Chatham accessories have clean shapes, slightly irregular surfaces in tones of gray and white. These add an artisanal touch to any space.
gray ceramic bath accessories
SB: What is the best way to bring in bathroom accessories without being too matchy?

BS: I much prefer the personal touch of handmade or found objects that don’t match when used as bathroom accessories. Many of our new accessory and textile collections are handmade so that no two pieces are exactly alike. For example, Chatam is kiln fired porcelain that is handmade in a small studio. Beautiful oversized white ceramic soap dishes look great on a counter as partners to more utilitarian nickel towel bars. A small vintage table is useful for candles and well packaged apothacary and more interesting than built in cabinets that resemble the ones in the kitchen.  It is the mixing and matching that makes any space more interesting.
SB: Do you have any creative tips for displaying towels?

BS: I love to layer towels on towel bars.  I start with thick rich white Gotham bath towels folded in thirds; I then add a different but neutral colored hand towel on top of the bath towel; the final layer is usually vintage linen towel with long fringe for additional texture. This inspired many of our new linen towels.
stylish woven basket bathroom towels
Sometimes I roll towels and place them in a beautiful woven basket and mix the palette for an added color splash in the bath.  Our Waterworks Jute basket is a perfect way to neatly store towels. I am very careful about how I fold the towels and often pile them up on the bathtub ledge. I recommend that all towels need to be folded very neatly and the assortment is limited.
lemon verbena diffuser for bath
SB: What are you favorite bathroom scents, soaps?

BS: I am not a flowery kind of person.  I think scents that suit my personality  are “outdoorsy and fresh”. I love lemon verbena, vervaine, eucalyptus and a hint of mint. Our new apothecary diffusers are a perfect way to diffuse a lovely scent without overwhelming.
fresh linen diffusers and candles
SB: You have a guest staying over – what are the three most important things that need to be done in a bath before they arrive?

BS: The bathroom must be sparkling clean for guests from the grout to the water closet. All light bulbs must be in working order and the mirrors clean.  Install a fresh roll of toilet paper, new bars of soap for the sink and the shower. Make sure there is a clean drinking glass.  It goes without saying that your towels are fluffy and newly washed.  And, don’t forget to place a container of your favorite body lotion on the shelf over the sink or on the counter. Our new Fresh Linen apothecary scent is reminiscent of how any guest bath should be: clean, welcoming and elegant.

Thanks Barbara for the great tips! All of the home furnishings and accessories pictured above are currently available on Waterworks online store
