One Room Challenge Fall 2015 :: My Foyer

For the past few months I’ve been keeping a few secrets. The first is we’ve moved! You may have seen glimpses of our beloved ranch style home on the San Francisco Peninsula featured in Rue Magazine. We have so many fond memories of the house, neighborhood and community. It was a very difficult decision to move outside the San Francisco Bay Area and away for dear friends, but we were longing for a slower pace and to be closer to Lake Tahoe where I grew up. We were blessed to find a wonderful 1940s traditional style house in the Reno / Tahoe area that we fell in love with. The only catch is it needs a gut job ton of work. It’s the money pit an adventure! So when Linda of Calling it Home offered me a spot in her One Room Challenge (aka ORC) this fall, I jumped at the chance (that’s the 2nd big secret I’ve been keeping!). For those that don’t know, the ORC is a collection of 20 bloggers that take on the challenge of making over one room in six weeks.

One Room Challenge Fall 2015The first challenge for me in the process was determining which room would get the face-lift. The 1970s kitchen? The dis-functional laundry room? Our pink master bath? Every inch of this home and property is vintage and needs some TLC! I ended up deciding that the Foyer was a great place to start for several reasons. One, it welcomes our guests and is a great space to set the tone of the home. It is also a room that will not have any walls, windows or doors changed out or moved at a later date.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be sharing my design, the process and many of the sources used throughout. Each Wednesday, there will be a new blog post as well as Instagrams, Tweets and Facebook posts. I hope you will follow along!

Here’s a look at the space before – starting from the front door and leading up to the upstairs landing.

I’m thrilled and honored to be among the following bloggers chosen for the One Room Challenge Fall 2015 edition!

ORC would like you to join in the fun too! Tomorrow, Thursday, October 8th, it’s the return of the One Room Challenge™ Linking Event. For six consecutive Thursday’s you show off your transformed room as well.

Healthy Home :: Easy Indoor Plants

antique chest // bedroom // simplified bee #chinoiserie

As I mentioned in the Rue article, plants are an essential element of home decor. House plants bring the outside in, add a splash of color and texture, but most importantly create healthy homes. These all natural air purifiers not only give off oxygen, but some varieties are known to remove harmful chemicals such as ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene. In addition, indoor plants can even decrease stress while boosting mood, memory, concentration. A win, win, win right? But, sometimes selecting the right plant can be overwhelming so here are some simple tips to keep in mind:

Below I’ve rounded up my top 5 best indoor plants. These are plants I incorporate in my own home because of their purifying properties and low maintenance.

Glimpses of a Design Client Installation

Installing for a design client is always exciting. In fact, I had the pleasure of doing a large install for a client just last week. It’s always fun to see the before and after transformation right in front of your eyes. Most of all, it great to see the smiles on your client’s face. I’m thrilled when they are in love with their new space.

Although it’s not time to share all, I have been sharing glimpses of this beautiful home and design on Instagram. Here are a few of my favorites.

I’m loving it all and am especially pleased with the wow factor Kelly Wearstler’s trellis wallpaper in citron gave the powder room (pictured above).

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Vintage Chic Home Office Design

As a designer I’m always seeking out chic vintage furnishings and home decor. My go to destinations include flea markets, estate sales and craigslist. However, the process of scouring through items can be time consuming, hit or miss and downright frustrating (is it the real deal? is the seller trustworthy?).  And of course this is simply the buying side, not the selling side of vintage furnishings! But fortunately there is now Chairish, an online marketplace where design lovers can exchange gently used, pre-owned furniture and decor directly with one another. They make the whole buying, selling and shipping process a breeze. In addition, the experts at Chairish hand-select and curate the collections of items on the site, so you know you’re getting quality vintage and designer decor that is accurately represented. Love!

The folks at Chairish asked me to select a favorite rug from various styles that were provided and then create a styleboard designed around that pattern and color scheme using furnishings from their site. I selected a beautiful grass green Turkish rug as the starting point for a vintage chic home office design. The process of sourcing and searching for items on Chairish was fast and easy. I could even keep track of my favorites along the way! The result is fresh, airy and of course chic.
