It can be chic, yet casual; rustic, yet refined. Rattan furniture is as popular as ever and a favorite of mine – my childhood room had a pair of rattan bookshelves that are still with me today. Timeless rattan furnishings add an unexpected accent to a room. I love to mix rattan pieces with traditional – it’s a great way to bring texture and pattern to space.

Here are a few current rattan accents I’m loving…

Reveal :: Modern Bathroom with Rove Concepts

This modern bathroom reveal is long overdue folks, but with the One Room Challenge for our foyer and master bathroom it got pushed aside. One of the first projects we tackled in our new fixer-upper home last year was the guest bathroom – mainly because of an active leak that needed to be addressed. Over the years, the bathroom had been updated here and there, but not in a good way. The blinds, contemporary vanity, plastic yellow tiles and glass mosaic tile work needed to go. In fact, the entire space needed to be gutted and it all had to go except the original tub. Take a look at the before images and you will understand.

We wanted the new bathroom to feel fresh, yet timeless; traditional, yet with a modern twist. The black hexagon cement tile flooring was selected first and the white subway tile contrasted with dark grout was a natural pairing. The window was painted a glossy black and dressed with a custom roman shade in a sharp black and white buffalo check fabric. A new smaller pedestal sink, chrome mirror and vanity lighting was also added for a clean look.

As you know, I love to mix styles and love modern touches. To complete the space I teamed up with Rove Concepts, a leader in mid-century modern reproduction furnishings and accessories. I appreciate their focus on quality, detail and use of the highest quality materials to deliver reflect the essence of minimalist design.

I love adding a stool or chair to a bathroom when space allows. Once the radiator under the window was removed, it seemed a lovely spot for seating. Rove Concepts’ Flag Halyard Ottoman was the perfect choice. This statement piece was inspired by Hans J. Wegner and features suspended flag line supported by a durable stainless steel frame. It also comes with a chic Australian long-haired sheepskin to drape over the top. Isn’t it divine?

You know how I like to incorporate live plants in every room and bathrooms are no exception. Rove Concepts’ Strapped Marble Vase caught my eye instantly as I knew it would look great in the space. It now houses a beautiful orchid. I adore the strap detail – it brings a little warmth to the space and coordinates with the ottoman nicely.

Keeping it simple and functional, I selected a black ceramic coffee cup to corral the toothbrushes. The cup’s finish is a combination of matte and glossy. A subtle, yet lovely detail.

I’m completely in love with this new bathroom. And a big thank you to Rove Concepts for helping me get it beautifully styled.

Book Review :: Home Decor Cheat Sheets

How high should you hang a chandelier hang above the dining table? What paint finish should you use a kid’s room? What size rug should go under your bed? When it comes to decorating the questions can be endless, but there are definitely some design dos and don’ts I adhere to. Some of these “rules” are easy to remember, but it’s always nice to have a cheat sheet or illustration to reference. Over time I have pinned, cut-out and dogeared pages in decor books, but have never had one single source. So I was thrilled to receive a copy of a newly released book, Home Decor Cheat Sheets by Jessica Probus that contains 300+ colorful, easy-to-understand images aimed at teaching you everything from furniture placement to bathroom lighting tricks, window styles to  how to make a floor plan. I’m loving the practical nature of this book and is a resource I’m looking forward to using for years to come. Decor lovers, you are going to want a copy of this helpful book. It would also make a perfect housewarming gift!

Just like the completion of any home, the cheat sheets in this book are meant to be used as a process not to be tackled in one day or even one year, but consulted as needed over time to make the kind of slow, purposeful improvements that turn a few walls and some well-hung curtains into an actual home. – Jessica Probus, Author of Home Decor Cheat Sheets

Sorry for the radio silence, but our kitchen remodel has been consuming much of my time these days. I’ve made tons of decisions regarding cabinetry design, fixtures and finishes, but still have a few up in the air. For example, I still have yet to select the counter stools for an island. I’m torn on material and design. Should I pick up brass accents to echo the pendant lighting? Add a chinoiserie touch? or go with something classic? Here are a few that have made the short list. eeny, meeny, miny, mo…
