Design Crush :: New York Apartment by Designer Ashley Whittaker

Over the July 4th holiday I had time to catch up on some of my favorite shelter magazines. One interior design project featured on the cover of this month’s House Beautiful, struck a cord with me. The delightful 800 square foot New York apartment was designed by Ashley Whittaker. Multi-functional furnishings, exquisite details and a mix of patterned wallcoverings are found throughout the home. Overall, the space has a feminine feel which is perfect for the owner, a single woman in her 30s. In the living room, Whittaker balances the lavender palette with with touches of gray and black. One of these elements is the fabulous black and white photograph hung above the sofa. The large-scale photograph is also a personal touch too because it’s by the the home owner’s brother, Landon Nordeman.

Design Crush :: Cynthia Brooks Design

While getting my daily dose of Pinterest, I came across a kitchen designed by Cynthia Brooks. I loved the simple, fresh and timeless feel of the white painted cabinets, carrara marble countertops and hicks light pendant. The dark stained wooden floors are a lovely contrast to all the white.

The image lead me to Cynthia’s portfolio, which is also full of beautiful interiors she has designed. Here are a few of my faves…

The brass and yellow neon lanterns by Urban Electric in the all-white kitchen (above) are the best. Love, love, love.

And don’t forget, there’s still time to enter to win a copy of Country Living’s book, The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas!

Color Palette :: Blue and White Interiors

blue and white contemporary wallpaper

Summer is almost officially here! (wahoo!) The warm weather has me thinking of the quintessential interior palette for the season: blue and white. This timeless color combo can be incorporated throughout the entire home: in living rooms, bedrooms and outdoor living spaces. It can also be featured in every style, from modern to traditional and everywhere in between.

In celebration of this classic color combo, I’ve rounded up some eye-catching blue and white home decor items. Check them out in an  ideabook I created for Houzz!

Happy Friday!

San Francisco Decorator Showcase :: The Salon

Even though the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase has come to a close, I wanted to share images a space I really enjoyed touring. The Salon designed by Matthew Leverone of Leverone Design is set just across from the Living Room on the mansion’s first floor. Initially I wasn’t sure how I felt about the design. The large pine trees caught me off guard. Growing up in the Sierra Mountains of Lake Tahoe it would have never occurred to anyone to bring a pine tree inside (unless of course it was Christmas!). But, it works here.

In addition to the non-traditional saplings, Leverone adds modern geometric and exotic elements to the otherwise classical, opulent gathering place.  Some of my favorite details include the vintage hand-knotted Moroccan rug, chrome & hide chair and rich velvet sofa & pillows.

I loved the stately marble fireplace stuffed with logs and the mirror layered with contemporary art. Leverone packs a lot into this well designed,  intimate space.

And in case you missed it, here’s tours the showcase Living Room, KitchenDressing Room, Office and Maker’s Mark Retreat.
