Designer Kitchen With Painted Floors

I came across this beautiful kitchen by San Francisco-based interior designer, Palmer Weiss while getting my daily dose of inspiration on Pinterest. The all white kitchen has a mix of traditional and contemporary elements including marble countertops, hicks pendant lights and stainless steel appliances. It was the fabulous and bold chartreuse painted flooring however,  that had me taking another look.

I love it. Do you?

Client Reveal: Family Kitchen Nook & Photo Gallery Wall

A few days ago, I shared images of a virtual client’s kids’ playroom. Today I’m excited to show you the kitchen nook area. The sunny corner nook features a seamless mix of styles, pattern and texture. For example, we blended contemporary patterns [Roman shades and throw pillows], a traditional Belgian oak trestle table and chic acrylic modern chairs [easy to clean & kid-friendly]. To anchor the space and add some texture, a woven drum pendant was selected. Crisp, white barstools were added to the kitchen island giving the family extra seating. They are also a breeze to clean, thus great for kids. I love how this space turned out!

In a nearby hallway, we added a personal touch to the space and designed a simple gallery wall of the family’s darling photos. As you can see below, the top row of frames are hung in a straight line. This allows for a fun mix of frame sizes and colors.

Interior Design of the Day: Jennifer Lopez’s LA Home by Michelle Workman

Today I am excited to be blogging about a favorite interior design over at Staci Edward’s {inspired by life} blog.  It was really hard to narrow down my absolute favorite interior design, so I am focusing on one I am loving at the moment: current American Idol judge, Jennifer Lopez’s Los Angeles home by the very talented  designer Michelle Workman which was recently featured in Veranda. {speaking of American Idol – how in the heck could Pia get voted off? Craziness.}

Originally Jennifer wanted a French inspired interior, but changed her mind and left Michelle just three months to pull the project together. Talk about pressure! The result is a glamorous, home that is fresh and inviting. “Jennifer wanted to go modern and streamlined but retain the sophistication and stylishness,” says Michelle in the Veranda article.

Here is a peak at my favorite room, the kitchen. I  typically gravitate to all white kitchens, but I am loving the cool gray-blue cabinets with white countertops. Gorgeous.
Michelle also designed a West Hollywood condo that I love and think you just might too.

Organizing the Kitchen Pantry in 5 Simple Steps

Is your pantry an eyesore? Are you buying duplicate food items because you don’t know what’s inside? Has your pantry had any unwanted visitors lately {i.e. ants}?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to organize your kitchen pantry. Does this seem like a daunting task? If so, here are five steps to help you organize your pantry with beauty and function:

First – Clear, Discard & Sort
Remove all the items from the pantry and place into boxes based product similarity (i.e. cereals, snacks, canned soups, pasta, baking products, etc.). In the process, check expiration dates and throw away products that have expired {recycle the container / packaging if possible}.

Second – Clean
Clean the pantry shelves and floor with a damp towel.

Third – Assess
Determine the group of items {cereals} that you use most frequently. With a post-it-note mark that box number one. Proceed to number all boxes from most frequently accessed to least. Also make notes on items that are out-of-stock and need to be replenished.

Fourth – Make it Pretty
Use decorative storage containers to hold certain items {i.e. tea, rice, flour } and to help you maintain a clutter-free pantry. I particularly like baskets, tins and jars to hide unsightly items. If you opt for plastic, buy BPA (Bisphenol) free containers. BPA is a chemical in many polycarbonate plastics that may breakdown and add harmful chemicals to food. Avoid types 3 and 7 plastics because they may contain BPA.

There are so many adorable ways to label the container like the DIY glass-etched storage jars above from Martha Stewart. It’s also important to determine the type and size of container needed before beginning this project.

Fifth – Arrange
Ideally your most used items should be placed at eye-level {except for heavy items such as large water bottles which would need to be at the floor level}. Again use post–it-notes to number / categorize which shelve each group of items will be housed. Fill the shelves on the appropriate shelf. If you are running out of space, consider storing non-essential items in the garage or basement.

Have you organized your pantry? If so, what tips do you have for keeping your pantry organized?
