Favorite Kitchen Design Trends 2018

With a new year, many of us have plans to renovate or fresh-up our homes. One living space I’d recommend starting with the heart of the home, the kitchen. We recently finished our kitchen renovation and I must say, it was worth the pain. If you are considering a kitchen renovation of your home, take a look at my favorite kitchen design trends for 2018.

ONE :: DARK KITCHENS

Move over all-white kitchens – dark kitchens are in! The dark kitchen however is not a new trend in 2018, but one that’s been building momentum over the last few years and can’t be ignored. From modern to traditional, dark gray, navy and black are hues are being used on cabinetry. I love it paired with white walls like in this kitchen designed by Studio McGee.

TWO :: STATEMENT RANGES

Another trend in kitchen design are statement ranges. Elaborate hoods are being toned down, while ranges are ramping up in style. Even though there are several luxury ranges that would certainly make a statement in your kitchen, La Cornue is leading the pack. La Cornue gives you more flexibility in customizing the color and trim of their ranges with 8 colors and 3 trim options. This gourmet kitchen (spotted on Instagram) feature’s a gorgeous La Cornue range in tapestry.

THREE :: COZY KITCHENS

Open floor plans have allowed for a easy access from kitchen to living spaces, however it’s been the textiles and furnishings which help deliver a seamless flow. In the process, kitchens are now getting more inviting, approachable and cozier. Adding upholstered banquettes, throw pillows and plush area rugs in the kitchen is a trend I don’t see slowing down in 2018. FOUR :: BLACK FINISHES

FOUR :: MATTE BLACK FINISHES

As I mentioned, darker colors are making a comeback in the kitchen, but it’s not just the cabinetry. I’m specifically noticing a shift from polished finishes (brass, chrome, etc.) to matte black. From lighting to faucets; appliances to hardware, matte black finishes are trending. Kitchen Design :: Faucet Selection

kitchen remodel // pella windows

Our kitchen remodel is in full swing. Drywall is being hung and next flooring and cabinets will be installed. The process is in deed exciting, but at times seems to be at a snails pace. While I sit of the sidelines from the construction, I have been busy purchasing a laundry list of items that will make our kitchen unique, personal and of course functional.

One item that took some time to source was the kitchen faucet for a farm style sink. I was instantly attracted to a classic bridge style and in the end selected a gorgeous two handle widespread bridge faucet by Rohl (as seen in the image above). Here are a few that were short runners however…

The One Sink Collection by Blanco

Earlier this week I discussed how homeowners are seeking gourmet touches throughout the kitchen. One fixture used on a daily basis and not to be overlooked is the kitchen sink. Kitchen sinks are essentially workstations and must meet a variety of needs. Finding a sink that allows you to customize your workstation based on your needs is hard to find… well, at least until now. BLANCO, German innovator of kitchen sinks and faucets and sponsor of #BlogTourVegas, recently launched the ONE Collection with three new stainless steel sinks and five innovative accessory kits that combine to form unique customized solutions for cooking, organizing and cleaning. The accessories are really what make this sink special and include a magnetic sink caddy for cleaning tools, a workstation to hold knives and utensils, an ash compound cutting board that fits to the sink and protective custom grids.

If you have a family and are worried about keeping knives out of reach, if you are a foodie and you want a cutting board that lets you clean, cut and save space, if you are living in a small metro space and you don’t have counterspace to both clean and prep – there’s a BLANCO ONE sink and accessories kit just for you. – Tim Maicher, Director of Marketing for BLANCO

Kitchens with Open Shelves

It’s a look that albeit isn’t for everyone, seems to be increasing in popularity: Kitchens with open shelves. Opening shelving in a kitchen will make the space seem larger and give an airy, uncluttered feel. It’s also a great way to display beautiful dishware. However, be mindful to select items that coordinate and to not overdo it – a jam-packed, cluttered shelf will only make the space feel smaller. If you are considering this look in your kitchen, I’ve pulled a variety of examples of  beautifully styled open shelves.

For an easy way to have open shelves in your existing kitchen is to simply remover the cabinet doors, fill in the holes where the hinges were and paint inside and out. The example below is a kitchen that I think did just that.

And speaking of kitchen design, I’m over the moon to be able to attend the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and the Design & Construction Week with BlogTour, presented by Modenus.com. Both tradeshows will be happening in Las Vegas the week of February 2-6. Along with a team of 14 other designers and design bloggers from both Canada and the U.S., I’ll have the opportunity to spot the latest trends and discover the newest products – all of which I will share with you here and on twitter  using #BlogTourVegas!  I’m so excited! A huge thank you and shout out to the sponsors of  BlogTour Las Vegas: KBIS, Blanco, Poggenpohl, Sub-Zero, Dekton, Mr Steam, Top Knobs, Wood-Mode, Formica Group, Walker Zanger and TOTO USA for giving me the opportunity!

Happy decorating,

Cristin
