New Traditional Interior Design by Courtney Giles

This weekend I caught up on reading some of my favorite shelter magazines. There was one house tour featured in Atlanta Homes and Lifestyle that caught my eye. Atlanta-based Interior Designer, Courtney Giles transformed the historic 1911 four bedroom house for a young couple. Sticking with a neutral palette for the most part, Giles’ design blends traditional elements with fresh , modern accents – it’s what I refer to as new traditional interior design. The result is inviting, elegant and current.

Love this black and white paneled pocket door, brass elements and chinoiserie wallpaper!

The chinoiserie wallpaper in the powder room is dramatic and bold, but a fun choice for this small space.

Kitchens with Open Shelves

It’s a look that albeit isn’t for everyone, seems to be increasing in popularity: Kitchens with open shelves. Opening shelving in a kitchen will make the space seem larger and give an airy, uncluttered feel. It’s also a great way to display beautiful dishware. However, be mindful to select items that coordinate and to not overdo it – a jam-packed, cluttered shelf will only make the space feel smaller. If you are considering this look in your kitchen, I’ve pulled a variety of examples of  beautifully styled open shelves.

For an easy way to have open shelves in your existing kitchen is to simply remover the cabinet doors, fill in the holes where the hinges were and paint inside and out. The example below is a kitchen that I think did just that.

And speaking of kitchen design, I’m over the moon to be able to attend the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and the Design & Construction Week with BlogTour, presented by Modenus.com. Both tradeshows will be happening in Las Vegas the week of February 2-6. Along with a team of 14 other designers and design bloggers from both Canada and the U.S., I’ll have the opportunity to spot the latest trends and discover the newest products – all of which I will share with you here and on twitter  using #BlogTourVegas!  I’m so excited! A huge thank you and shout out to the sponsors of  BlogTour Las Vegas: KBIS, Blanco, Poggenpohl, Sub-Zero, Dekton, Mr Steam, Top Knobs, Wood-Mode, Formica Group, Walker Zanger and TOTO USA for giving me the opportunity!

Preppy Home Office

disclosure: This post contains an affiliate links, which means Simplified Bee receives commission if you make a purchase using this link.

Have you been thinking about giving your home office an update? These images may just motivate you to do that. You may recall my wonderful intern from the past two summers, Michaela. Last year she graduated from design school and has launched her own firm, Michaela Noelle Designs. I’m thrilled to share with you a project she recently debuted. It’s a preppy home office design for a mutual friend of ours that has two boys. Looking to have a girly space of her own, she hired Michaela to transform her catch-all office space into a room that’s fresh, feminine and beautifully organized.

We created four zones for the office: the bookshelf /scrapbooking supply area, the desk, window seat and bar cart we are calling our “craft cart”. Bar carts really are versatile! – Michaela

The thing I love about my new office space is the way I feel when I go in there: peace and happiness! My old office made me crazy with all the clutter and disorganization. I love the Expedite unit with all the baskets and storage and finally somewhere to put all my scrapbooking albums! I also love the prints in my office, such a great idea, especially the LOVE one above my desk. – happy client

I love that the vintage trunk was kept under the window. It’s softened with floor length West Elm drapery in a soft lattice pattern and a trio of throw pillows in navy velvet and a chinoiserie floral by Caitlin Wilson Textiles. If interested in knowing more product sources featured in this beautiful office, please visit Michaela’s blog!

Bravo Michaela! Love, love, love  it!

Happy decorating,

Cristin

Beautiful Laundry Room by Kriste Michelini Interiors

Based here in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kriste Michelini Interiors is know for creating timeless, classic, yet freshly modern spaces. You may recall her chic Writer’s Retreat designed for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase this year.  If you loved it as much as I did, you will absolutely swoon when seeing her latest project. It’s a fresh and airy multipurpose laundry room designed for a family with two young boys. I know, I know. It’s our dream room isn’t it?! I love every inch.

I loved creating this multipurpose laundry room that could serve many functions – a mudroom, gift wrapping center and of course laundry central. My favorite items include a rugged outdoor tile that can stand up to tons of traffic, the vibrant wallpaper at the desk for a pop of color and lastly the gorgeous hanging pendant. It actually makes me want to do laundry! – Kriste Michelini
