Book Review :: Windsor Smith HOMEFRONT

Her interiors are glamorous, yet practical; sophisticated, yet relaxed. She strikes the perfect balance. I’m talking about A-list interior designer, Windsor Smith. She is simply one of the best in the business and so it’s no surprise that her first book, HOMEFRONT (Rizzoli) is absolutely fantastic. Filled with over 200 inspiring images, Smith walks through her process for creating beautiful, functional spaces from design intuition to the home in balance. In the book’s introduction, she explains her goal is to “design beautiful rooms for the way people today actually use them, regardless of their intended purpose, breaking the rules as to how a room ‘should’ function.” Her approach of creating livable spaces in every corner of the home resonates with me. Take a look at just some of the gorgeous images that grace the pages of this book and I think you’ll agree too.

A home in balance is masculine and feminine, antique and modern, light and dark, austere and glam, rustic and sophisticated – all these things in perfect harmony. – Windsor Smith

I’m like an unruly child when it comes to design. There’s always a point where I say: “What if this weren’t the dining room?” – Windsor Smith

holiday front door decor // simplified bee #TargetStyle

Last week I prepped our dinner table for the holidays, but this week I’m focusing on decorating the outside of our home. The first step is to create a festive holiday front door. Dressing up the your entry for the season is a great way to greet guests dropping by for celebrations, Christmas parties and holiday visits. With help from Target, I created a traditional Christmas look for our front door. I started by flanking the black front door with red poinsettias, pinecone & berry trees and birch lantern candle holders. Every door needs a holiday decor and I selected a classic boxwood wreath. I added a traditional black and white striped ribbon and sprigs of live red berries to complete the look. As a finishing touch I selected a fresh diamond door mat. Loving the result!

Five Favorites :: Fabulous Entryways

Entryways offer us first glimpses into a home. It’s where we welcome guests and in some cases store such things as coats, purses, keys  and mail.  Entryway design takes planning if you want to it to be both beautiful and functional, so I’ve rounded up a few fabulous entryways that do both.

Getting Organized :: Mudrooms

We are sadly counting down the days until the kids go back to school (yes, we haven’t started yet!). As you know, there is a great deal of preparation that goes into getting children ready for the first days of school. Getting the kids organized also motivates me to tackle other areas of our home and has me dreaming of a room we don’t have. A mudroom. In California, we don’t need a space for snowy boots and over-sized coats, but it sure would be nice to have a drop zone for shoes, backpacks and sporting equipment.

Here are a few organized mudrooms that I’d welcome in my home any day!

I really like this mudroom with open shelving and shoe storage on the stone flooring.

Organizing your home too? Remember the first step is to declutter! Conquering clutter isn’t easy, but here’s questions to ask yourself when decluttering.

Happy Organizing!

Cristin
