Southern California architects and husband/wife team, M. Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp are known for their thoughtful attention to the relationship between architecture and landscape. Their goal is to seamlessly knit together exterior and interior spaces. In their newly released book, Outside In: The Gardens and Houses of Tichenor & Thorp (Vendome), the design duo invites us into their own beautiful, luxurious homes. From Mediterranean to Colonial, California desert to the foot of the Tetons in Wyoming, the book delivers over 475 stunning photographs and illustrations. Starting with the land and views, it also dives into Tichenor & Thorp’s core design elements of each project. I found myself enjoying going between projects I was personally drawn to instead of reading from cover to cover. It a great book for any architectural and landscape lover.

When outside and inside are designed together and as a whole, there is a cohesiveness that is extraordinary: Interiors feel expansive and light, and the garden feels connected and accessible—an integral part of the living environment. – M. Brian Tichenor, AD

Chic Modern Entry

San Francisco entryway #entry
A home’s entry is one of the most important spaces to decorate and organize. It’s the place where you will meet & greet guests, take on and off shoes and hang up coats and scarves. And for this, it needs to be both beautiful and functional. This chic modern entry was designed by Lauren Nelson and recently featured in San Francisco Cottages & Gardens.

timeless modern entry // san franciscoI’m loving all the design details – the chevron front door, striking Pietra marble floors and rustic wooden bench topped with an organic sheepskin rug. The console table and baskets are perfect for helping organized keys, scarves and shoes.

Elements of Modern Farmhouse Style

modern farm house // H2 Design + Build

The simple, clean-lined, practical design of the modern farmhouse is appealing and trending. A wraparound porch, standing metal seam roof and industrial lighting is one quick way to spot one from the street. But, the rustic, yet refine style goes beyond the exterior. Inside plank wooden flooring and exposed reclaimed beams are often offsite by crisp white walls. In fact, the modern farmhouse color palette is typically very simple: black, white, and gray. Classic stripe and check patterns are also featured throughout the home including throw pillows, wallpaper and tile work. Other farmhouse elements often found are sliding barn doors, apron sinks and ship-lap siding. I’ve rounded up a few images of different rooms through a house that are great examples of modern farmhouse style.

5 Favorites :: Organizing Your Home

organized mudroom #getorganized

(image via remodelista)

Hello 2017! With the new year brings new resolutions. One goal that may top your list is organizing your home. However, this can be easier said than done! Cleaning closets, organizing the entry, and clearing the clutter takes planning, time and motivation. In the spirit of getting organized in 2017, I’m sharing 5 simple ways to get organized.
ONE :: HOOKSsimple entry with hooks and bench

Entryways are a dumping ground for coats, shoes and bags. Make the space more orderly with wall hooks to hang items. I love this example by Coco.Kelley.

TWO :: BASKETSorganized linen closet with baskets

Linen closets can get messy quickly if they are not planned out. I recommend baskets with tags to keep the space well organized. Here Ballard Designs uses chic woven baskets house toilet paper and bedding.

THREE :: PIN BOARDScork wall // home office

I’m a huge fan of pin boards to keep important papers organized and top of mind. This cork wall is not only a great way to keep announcements, invites and important documents organized, it’s a decor statement. Love!

FOUR :: CLEAR STORAGE

Acrylic storage is a favorite of mine for obvious reasons – you can see everything inside saving so much time. I love this example of acrylic drawer front for a closet I spotted on My Domaine.

FIVE :: TRAYS

I love trays for organizing. I use them throughout the house to corral items. Above are two examples of how I use trays in my own home. The first is a ceramic tray to house bathroom essentials and the second is a simple wooden tray to keep oils, spices and other kitchen items organized beautifully.
