My Favorite Posts of 2014

As I look back over the past year, it always amazes me how fast it goes by. 2014 was a busy, yet rewarding year both personally and professionally. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some wonderful clients, build a beautiful addition on our own home and celebrate this blog’s five year anniversary (wahoo!). Here’s a look at some of my favorite posts of 2014:

Design Reveal :: Marble Bathroom

After months of planning, designing and building, our home addition is complete. 🙂 Although I’m enjoying all of the new space, my favorite is the new master bathroom. At 6′ x 7′ its certainly isn’t big, but it has what we need. Come take a peek.

The white and gray carrera tile was my starting point for the crisp, clean color scheme. The honeycomb pattern floor tiles are paired with 6″ x 18″ honed white carrera field tiles in a subway pattern for the shower and walls. Both were ordered through my friends at the Tile Bar. For maximum storage I designed the custom white vanity with a tower and a single sink (we needed the storage more than a second sink).  For contrast and durability it was topped with a charcoal quartz. The hardware gives it a little mix of chinoiserie and mid-century modern style. I love the result.

It was hard to resist the brass trend and instead selected polished chrome finishes for all of the fixtures and hardware. I wanted the new addition to feel like it was always part of the home, so didn’t change up the finishes. I selected a beautiful traditional faucet by California Faucets that is perfect for my 1940s ranch style home. This particular style of widespread faucet (shown above) is available through Belmont Hardware. Ask for Ron in the Belmont store and he can hook you up! I also love that California Faucets allows you to design your own faucet in over 30 decorative finishes!

The shower also features California Faucets’ hand-shower, thermostatic system and drain. Not only do I love the look and feel, but all of these products comply with strict water conservation building codes. According to the California law, all shower heads must flow no more than 2.5 gallons of water per minute, interior faucets must emit no more than 2.2 gallons of water per minute and all toilets must use no more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush.

Here’s a closer look at California Faucets’ StyleTherm Thermostatic System. We selected a round chrome plate with a single volume control. Even though we have two shower heads, the control will only allow us to run one at a time to comply with the new water conservation rules. Anything to help the drought and save water is okay by me!

The Neo Style drain is so chic too! Love it. You have to check out all of the other luxe drains at California Faucets!

Do you remember my Mr. Steam article? Well, I fell in love with the product so much I had to get one for the new shower. In addition to the Mr. Steam unit we selected a fold-down teak bench and a sleek iTempo control system. The control system is housed inside the shower which is the best. We are loving our new steam bath!

There are also some smaller design details in the bathroom that make the space functional and beautiful including the light sconestowel rack, acrylic tray, tassel hand towels, cement succulentenamel bath accessories and simple banded Roman shade. The scone shades have a silver trim which I was drawn to.

A big thank you to California Faucets, Mr. Steam and TileBar for helping me create the perfect bathroom. Loved working with you on the design and thrilled with the result.

happy decorating,

cristin

Beautiful Southern California Home Tour

It’s a new week and I’m thrilled to be sharing a beautiful project by Corona del Mar, California-based interior designer, Ohara Davies-Gaetano. The emerging designer (recently published in Veranda) helped a family remodel and settle into their new Newport Beach home (downsizing from their previous one in Virginia). Ohara created an inviting, comfortable, yet elegant space reflective of her clients’ casual lifestyle. She also wanted a very open feeling where all areas of the house seamlessly flow into the next. Because the home was much smaller than what the owners were used to, each room had to serve its purpose and be functional. European antiques found throughout the home add small but elegant touches, which epitomize Ohara’s passion for mixing a little old with the new. I also love how her design  embraces the gorgeous light, landscape and outdoor living Southern California is known for.

My New Addition Sneak Peek & Cleaning with Pledge®

Doesn’t it feel good to wrap up a project? That’s the way I’m feeling this week as the finishing touches are completed on the new addition in our home. It’s been four months of hammering, debris and dust but, the result was worth all these minor inconveniences. I’m not quite prepared to show you the project in its entirety, but would like to share some sneak peeks of some of the finishes that were selected and on Instagram.

You must have guessed I would select a hexagon pattern for the bathroom floor 🙂 This one is in carrara marble.

The shower will feature a steam shower (Mr. Steam of course) and will soon be my favorite spot in the whole house.

chrome bathroom faucet // simplified bee

I went round and round with what surface to select for the bathroom vanity, but in the end I selected a charcoal gray quartz. Super durable. Love the contrast it has with the all white vanity too.

driftwood gray walk-in closet // simplified bee

The new walk-in closet is another favorite space. It’s in a driftwood gray laminate. It’s really stunning. I’ll go into more detail about this later 🙂

hardwood floors + hide rug // www.simplifiedbee.com

For the bedroom and to coordinate with the rest of the house, we selected white oak floors in a natural stain. New hardwood floors are the best. I’ve layered them with a super soft silvery hide rug.

As I mentioned, all of the dust from the construction has added up. And before we can move all of our furnishings, clothing and personal items into the new space, it needed to be cleaned. You may remember the traditional Pledge in the yellow can? Did you know Pledge® also makes cleaners for floors and other surfaces in your home? The nice folks at Pledge sent me some of their newer products out in my own home to test for myself. Pledge’s Multi Surface Everyday Cleaner was a favorite because it easily removes dust, fingerprints and smudges from a variety of surfaces including wood, marble, chrome, granite, glass and stainless steel. It was the perfect all in one cleaner from counters to windows to shelves.

Attending BlogHer 2014 in San Jose this weekend? If so, please drop by the SC Johnson booth and say hi! I’ll be helping share design and organizing tips in the “living room” where Pledge® is being showcased. Product demos will be going on all day as well and we’d love to send you home with a sample to try in out yourself. In addition there will be some fabulous prizes including five chances to win Pledge® products and a $50 Visa gift. There will also be two chances to win a grand prize; all the must-haves for family game night including a collection of board games OR an XBOX One. The booth will also showcase other SC Johnson products including Ziploc, Shout, Glade and Scrubbing Bubbles. If you can’t make BlogHer, join the conversation on Twitter or Instagram using #Pledge2Reset!

happy decorating,

cristin
