One Room Challenge :: Week 3

It’s week three of the One Room Challenge and our master bathroom + walk-in closet makeover is in full swing! Last week I unveiled the design direction for the project and demolition process. Today I’m excited to share with you selections made for the bathroom’s wallpaper, paint and stone.

As for the stone selection, I started with the floor tile. I fell in love with the mosaic octagonal tile Villa D’Oro by Walker Zanger. It features beautiful shades of gray and white. I paired the bold patterned floor with a simple white carrara in 2″ x 2″ hexagon and 12″ x 24″ field tile for the shower. I also found a gorgeous calacatta marble slab for the vanity countertop, shower bench and doorway threshold.

First, I knew I wanted to use pops of wallpaper in both the bathroom and closets. As you know, I have already selected Great Wave in stone by Cole & Son available through ORC sponsor, DecoratorsBest. In the bathroom we have a small water closet that I wanted to incorporate a bold pattern using wallpaper. Below are a few that were options.

In the end, I selected Woods & Pears in black, white and bronze by Cole & Son (also available through ORC sponsor, DecoratorsBest). I have loved the Woods wallpaper for along time and was thrilled to see that it had been updated with whimsical pears in bronze. The mix of color was perfect because it would compliment all the mixed finishes in fixtures, hardware and accessories throughout the bathroom and closet. Here’s a peek at the water closet with the new wallpaper. Typically I would have the wallpaper hung last, but in this case the space was so small, the hanger wanted to go in before the tile floor, base boards and toilet were installed.

As you can see from the before images, our bathroom was pink and I loved the metallic pink wallpaper. My husband didn’t care for an all pink master bathroom however, so it all had to go. One area that I thought would be fun however to add a splash of the feminine color, was in my closets that line the master bathroom and cover the top of the make-up vanity. I’ve always adored their timeless Bumblebee wallpaper by Farrow & Ball (known for their signature paint and wallpapers and fabulous ORC sponsor). When I found out that the pattern was being released in Peignoir – a fabulous gray, pink – I had to incorporate it! I get my pink and my bees! Isn’t it perfect?

As for selecting a color for the walls in both the master bathroom and walk-in closet, I wanted to keep the spaces crisp and contemporary. I desired a neutral white that pulled a hint of gray , yet was warming. Farrow & Ball’s Strong White no. 2001 delivers both elements and was my selection for all of the cabinets, vanity, trim and walls in both spaces. In the walk-in closet, I pulled another warm – yet darker neutral – Cornforth White no. 228 for the walk-in closet’s ceiling (goes amazing with Cole & Son’s Great Wave Wallpaper) and for the base of the make-up vanity in the bathroom. For a little drama, I selected Farrow & Ball’s Worsted no. 284 for ceiling in the water closet – pulls the right shade of gray from the Woods + Pair wallpaper and octagon mosaic floor tile. farrow & ball paint colors // bathroom // @simplifiedbee #oneroomchallengeHere’s a look at the new shelving that was custom built for the walk-in closet and painted in Farrow & Ball’s Strong White. Awe… nothing like a clean closet!

Next week I’ll be sharing the selection process for lighting, plumbing and bath fixtures! I’ve also been posting more images of my project on Instagram. And in case you missed the first two weeks, here are the links:

San Francisco Decorator Showcase :: Teen Girls Bathroom

As I mentioned before, the 2015 San Francisco Decorator Showcase  featured lots and lots of beautiful wallcoverings. One space that stood out, was the “Lip Service” teen girl’s bathroom by designers Jennifer Wundrow and Heather Brock of Nest Design Co. The daring kiss-themed wallpaper by Voutsa in crimson, tangerine and blush covered much of the walls. The playful, modern pattern was paired with a classic marble herringbone floor. In addition, the bathroom features strong sculptural pieces including the freestanding cast-iron tub by Kohler and a gorgeous custom inlaid horn vanity. Touches of brass are found throughout the space such as the statement light fixtures, contemporary faucets and brass intaglio inlaid in the flooring and shower. Such wonderful details in the space!

Interview :: J.K. Kling Interior Design

I was instantly drawn to the fresh, elegant and traditional minimalism of the interiors showcased in the portfolio of J.K. Kling Associates. With over 25 years of experience, Judy Kling and daughter Wendy Wolcott are transforming interiors from Manhattan to Palm Beach. Rich in pattern, color and comfort, the design duo creates the kind of spaces that make you not want to leave your home. So I’m thrilled to be interviewing Wendy Wolcott of J.K. Kling Associates today!

Simplified Bee:  I love that you are a mother – daughter team! When did you realize that you wanted to design together?

Wendy Wolcott: Ever since my mother started J.K. Kling Associates when I was fourteen, I would intern for her during the summers and was always involved in the business in one way or another. It was not until working with David Easton in New York City that I realized what a great opportunity it would be working for my mother. Although working for an amazing firm like David’s was invaluable, nothing could compare to the hands on experience you get with having your mother as your boss.

SB: What are your personal styles? How are they similar? Different?
WW: Our personal styles are very much alike. We gravitate towards a more neutral palette that is well edited yet comfortable. Wendy tends to designs with a more modern look and practical, kid friendly approach due to having two boys and a dog. Judy, on the other hand, has a more classic and sophisticate style in which she combines antiques and modern accents beautifully.
Billy Baldwin // living room
SB: Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project?
WW: There are so many fabulous architects and designers that we would love to work with but if we could only pick one, Billy Baldwin would be an honor to work with. One of our favorite quotes from Billy was “I have always believed that architecture is more important than decoration. Scale and proportion give everlasting satisfaction that cannot be achieved by only icing the cake.”  Billy was very much ahead of his time. The image above could easily be from the 1960’s or today.

SB: Do you have “go to” paint colors? If so, which ones?
WW: We are very loyal to our Benjamin Moore colors. BM White Dove and Super White can be found in almost all of our homes; however right now we are coveting Farrow & Ball’s High Lacquer Hague Blue.

SB: Which of today’s interior design trends are here to stay and which ones will we see fade away?
WW: While ikats and over-scaled patterns have been in and out of the spotlight for decades there may be a trend towards smaller more minimalistic patterns and design in the future.
traditional living room // JK Kling
SB: Where do you recommend clients splurge versus save?
WW: We always clients to encourage invest in at least one good piece of art. You can fill your home with great looking pieces, in any price range, but great art that speaks to you is priceless.
traditional garden gate // gardern
SB: What excites you most about interior design today?
WW: Since Judy entered the business, in 1984, her absolute passion is what the internet has brought to interior design. There was once a time where you had to research, travel and scout. Nowadays, so much is accessible right from your design studio.

SB: Fill in the blank. No room is complete without…
WW: No room is complete without great lighting and something personal. A room can change completely with the right light bulb and personal photographs of friends and family. We also feel no bedroom is complete with out the most luxurious bedding, nothing can make is better than the softest ironed sheets and a downy bed.
powder room with chic wallpaper // JK Kling
SB: Do you have a favorite design tip or words of wisdom when decorating?
WW: Every eight to ten years a room needs a face lift. No matter how well a room is kept fresh and modern touches always make a difference.

SB: What’s next for J.K. Kling Associates?
WW: Since the opening of our new Palm Beach office, our past year has been filled with travel, wonderful clients and exciting new projects. We can only hope to continue on this fantastic path.

Thank you Wendy for your time. We look forward to seeing your next project!
