Summertime Break

Before the kids head back to school and the warm days of summer have gone by, I’m taking a little break from work and blogging. I’m looking forward to beaching it with my family, soaking in some sun and getting some need relaxation.
I do hope you have found time this summer to enjoy some needed downtime, hang with family & friends and recharge your spirit.
I’ll be back in a week!

Timeless Master Bathroom by ScavulloDesign

calacata-subway-tile-bathroom
This serene master bathroom by San Francisco-based ScavulloDesign is now on my list of favorite bath designs! Interestingly the sunlit bath was designed for a bachelor on the search for “Ms. Right.” ScavulloDesign did a wonderful job of balancing  styles to create a timeless space that appeals to any occupant. The design team paired traditional elements like wainscoting wrapping the room and exposed plumbing in the shower to add interest while the finishes kept the space clean, crisp and inviting. To keep in line with the client’s traditional taste they incorporated Calacatta marble in coordinating gold and gray tones, which allowed for pattern play without being too busy.

Dorothy Draper Inspired Entertaining & LONNY

Lauren-McGrath-Lonny-Mag-2012
I was so excited to see Lauren McGrath of Good Bones, Great Pieces on the cover of this month’s Lonny Magazine. Inspired by the design icon, Dorothy Draper, Lauren creates a beautiful setting for a summer dinner party on the shaded lawn of her Westchester County home. As a  starting point Lauren uses Brazillance, a South American-inspired textile designed by Draper in 1947 to create a stunning table runner. Lauren did a wonderful job of capturing the spirit of the revolutionary designer. It was Draper who in 1923 launched the first interior design company in the United States, something that was considered daring for the time (& aren’t we glad she did!).

I love Lauren’s mix of pattern and color. Isn’t the bar housed in the black & white striped Portofino Pavilion from ZGallerie fun?

Client Media Built-in Styling Before & After

It always amazes me what a little styling can do. Last week my intern extraordinaire, Michaela and I styled a media built-in bookcase in a client’s family room. As you will see from the before and after, we balanced out the look by turning a few books horizontally, adding objects with pops of color and leaving some shelves with an open feel. We only added a couple of items, but most were exiting and simply repositioned.

We loved the way it turned out. And just in case you missed it, here’s an article I wrote a while back with Tips for Styling a Bookcase.

And a BIG thank you to Michaela for taking all of these pretty pictures!
Happy Decorating and Happy Friday!
