Adorable Kids’ Rooms by Designer House of Ruby

Melodie Rubin is the founder of the luxury San Francisco Bay Area  interior design firm, House of Ruby. Her timeless interiors balance classic aesthetic traditions with personalized, custom details, resulting in spaces that are exquisite, yet approachable. I was particularly drawn to the children’s spaces Melodie has designed. Each wonderfully created with kids in mind, but still have a sophistication that mom & dad’s love.

Boys Daybed in Blue and Red with Stars

In this boy’s room Melodie selects a charming daybed in navy with star detail. I love the layers of pillow in various colors, sizes and textures. Such an inviting bed!

In one corner a beanbag chair is placed in a canopy. What a great quiet time spot. A pair of red cubbies help keep books, games and collections organized – love that they are one wheels!

Pink and Yellow Girls Designer Bedroom

Yellow and pink is a beautiful color palette for a little girl’s room. Here Melodie chooses wallpaper in yellow with pink polka-dots covering the walls. The upholstered pink headboard with nailhead trim is a standout in the space.

Orange and White Painted Dresser

I love every inch of this nursery! It’s layered in beautiful pattern and color. The white dresser with persimmon accents is so chic! The sweet elephant artwork hanging above adds a touch of whimsy to the space.

Orange Designer Baby Nursery Room

An eye-catching four poster crib is draped in exquisite textiles in a variety of patterns. I love the crib skirt!

Orange Designer Glider Nursery Room

Melodie also seamlessly mixing styles in the space. A traditional tufted back upholstered glider is accompanied by a modern lucite side table and contemporary fish lamp.

In a child’s bathroom, Melodie covered the walls in a darling fish patterned wallpaper. I am loving the shell and starfish mirror she added too!

Red Roman Shade with Blue Pom Pom Trim

Lucite Shower Curtain Rod

Melodie is a master with the details. I particularly like the blue pom pom trim she added to the red Roman shade and the lucite rod and hardware for the shower curtain.

What kid (or parent) wouldn’t love these spaces?

Client Reveal: Family Kitchen Nook & Photo Gallery Wall

A few days ago, I shared images of a virtual client’s kids’ playroom. Today I’m excited to show you the kitchen nook area. The sunny corner nook features a seamless mix of styles, pattern and texture. For example, we blended contemporary patterns [Roman shades and throw pillows], a traditional Belgian oak trestle table and chic acrylic modern chairs [easy to clean & kid-friendly]. To anchor the space and add some texture, a woven drum pendant was selected. Crisp, white barstools were added to the kitchen island giving the family extra seating. They are also a breeze to clean, thus great for kids. I love how this space turned out!

In a nearby hallway, we added a personal touch to the space and designed a simple gallery wall of the family’s darling photos. As you can see below, the top row of frames are hung in a straight line. This allows for a fun mix of frame sizes and colors.

“In many ways, our new App will revolutionize how consumers begin their search to find the perfect window treatments for their homes”, said Ron Kass, Hunter Douglas Executive Vice President of Marketing. “It brings together in one place everything a consumer needs to get started, simplifying the process and making it a whole lot more efficient and enjoyable.”
Part photo book and part rendering tool with a sophisticated “Swatch Sorter” function, “The Art of Window Dressing” App also lets you save and share your design ideas with family and friends.

Features include:

· The “Fashion Show” section – a virtual showroom of the most comprehensive line of custom window fashions that add great design to any home.  Consumers can browse the runway of hundreds of interiors, and see how each product can help transform a home aesthetically, while delivering a myriad of benefits, from light control to energy savings.
· The “Dress A Window” section capitalizes on the Hunter Douglas proprietary iMagine™ rendering tool, which allows consumers to see how each product would look in sample room scenes or in their own home.  Consumers can take their own picture of a room and render Hunter Douglas products right on the windows to preview how different styles impact the overall décor.
· The “Swatch Sorter” tool provides a wonderful way to sort through the thousands of fabric and style options available within the product collection. The tool lets a consumer select among light-filtering options, different style choices and colors.  The color section of the tool sorts the fabric choices available in each product style by color families. Once a color family is selected, just the fabrics within that color family are shown so that the process of finding just the right fabric/color combination is a whole lot easier.

Window Treatment Ideas for Bay Windows

Today I’ve asked Tammy Tant, a window covering specialist at BG Custom Windows and blogger at In Stitches to share with us solutions for covering bay windows. She has over 20 years experience in the creating custom window treatments for interior designers and homeowners.

A bay window is a group of windows, usually three or five, that are set at angles to each other and can be challenging when deciding how to cover them. Some of the main areas to consider are architecture, privacy, heat gain or loss and air flow. This room is in a house on Martha’s Vineyard and the designer, Lisa Sternfeld didn’t want to obstruct the gorgeous views of the sea. If you are lucky enough to have an amazing view and don’t need privacy then feel free to leave your bay windows bare.

Most of us aren’t that lucky and our rooms can really be enhanced by the perfect window coverings. You can treat each window separately with individual shades and valances like I did in this breakfast nook. This is a good option if you have several inches of wall space between each window casing.

Putting stationary side panels on the outside edges and a continuous valance across the top is a great option if you don’t need privacy or you are putting individual blinds or shades at each window. These swags and panels frame the window in an elegant way that is a little more formal.

Do you have beautiful trim that you don’t want to cover ? If so and you want a clean look, shutters can be a great solution. They are available painted or stained and come in varying louver sizes depending on the look you want.

My favorite treatment for a bay or bow window is to have the rods mitered in the corners if they are made of wood. Mitering is tricky and I recommend a professional installer for this one. Iron rods use a special corner bracket to join them in the corners. This treatment allows you to fill in all the wall spaces with curtain panels for a soft look and feel and you can close each panel for privacy.

Some bays are inset and have wall space above the window. On these types of windows you can mount your treatment on the outside so it frames the bay. We used 3″ wood poles and 3 widths of silk in these panels that are lined and interlined to make them nice and full.

Another option is to hang your valance from medallions, this is a great look for a kitchen or breakfast nook {below}. They come in different diameters and can be made of wood or iron. You can also hang panels from these instead of a rod.

Hopefully you got some great ideas for decorating your bay windows and all of these solutions would work on your regular windows too!
