ELLE DECOR Showhouse San Francisco: Glamorous Master Bedroom and Bath by Jay Jeffers

ELLE DECOR’s first-ever Designer Showhouse is going on now in San Francisco. For months, the 5,000 square-foot Mediterranean style home in the heart of the historic St. Francis Wood neighborhood was taken down to the studs and renovated. The interior was transformed by eleven of the San Francisco’s most talented interior designers – all of which were handpicked by ELLE DECOR.

Today I will be showing glimpses of the Master Bedroom and Bath created by A-list interior designer, Jay Jeffers. Founded in 1999 by Jay, Jeffers Design Group designs a wide range of projects from studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Principal Jay Jeffers leads the design of every project, supported by Senior Designer Kelly Hohla and an experienced team of designers, architects and project managers.

Jay and his team designed a glamorous master suite that is tranquil, sophisticated and inviting. It’s one of my favorite rooms in the showhouse. The gorgeous bed takes center stage and is flanked by bedside scones from Urban Electric and Marc du Plantier gilt finished tables from Therien 20th. A geometric fabric from Holland & Sherry was used for the custom bed coverlet. The custom bed headboard and base fabrication by Thomas Sellars Furniture is Jay’s favorite element in the room.

The suite’s neutral color palette might be a surprise for those who have seen some of Jay’s more colorful designs. In this instance he uses a soothing color palette is dominated by hues of gray, creams and sand. Pops of teal are introduced in small doses on the bed’s shams and throw pillows {above} and on a pair of benches at the base of the bed {below}. This is indeed a space both genders would feel at home in. Jay also mentioned that the design reflects his personal design sensibilities and tastes. Mine too!

Jay Jeffers Elle Decor Benches

The benches from Svenska Mobler were reupholstered a jewel toned Jim Thompson fabric. The geometric design is echoed in the hand-painted ceiling by Willem Racke Studio {below}.

Opposite the bed is a simple, yet stunning marble fireplace and an inviting seating area. A chandelier from Habite is hung in the center of the room and adds just the right romantic touch. A stunning ottoman with custom embroidery & applique of fabric from Holland & Sherry is flanked by a pair of arm chairs by Franco Albini from Eccola.

Here is a better look of the custom upholstered ottoman. Can you see the hints of teal embroidery and applique in the mosaic pattern? It is an exquisite piece of furniture.

Jay Jeffers Bar Cart Metal

In the back corner of the room, Jay placed a chic custom-designed metal bar cart by Paul Benson. It’s just the right proportions for the space.

A modern Samuel Marx Parchment Secretaire Cabinet from Modern One provides glamorous vertical storage.

Jay Jeffers Branch Mirror Cruz

The thorny branches in the mirror by Blackman Cruz mimic the softer branches in the stone console table below. The walls are covered in a gorgeous woven metallic grasscloth by Phillip Jeffries – it has beautiful silver undertones that give it such depth and elegance.

Elle Decor Showhouse Jay Jeffers Master Bath

The master bath features a generous shower, bath and dual sinks. The raised glass sinks and wall mounted bath fixtures are by Kohler. Typically I am not a fan of the raised sink, but in this case the sink’s low profile and generous bowl won me over. The modern white vanity is topped with a warm Silestone.

Jay Jeffers Ann Sacks Tile Gray

Here is a closer look at the beautiful mosaic stone tile by Ann Sacks. Do you recognize the mosaic pattern? It echos the one on the ottoman in the bedroom’s seating area.

Jay Jeffers Ann Sacks Bath Tub

Basic Ann Sacks tiles cover the floor, shower and bath surround and create a beautiful textured pattern. The more refined, simpler pattern is a nice juxtaposition to bold mosaic. The walls in the bathroom as seen behind the tub are plaster that was hand-painted by Willem Racke Studio. The application is stunning.
Isn’t this a spectacular master suite? I love the repeated patterns, harmonious color palette and mixture of materials & period styles. What do you like?

PS – And in case you missed it, here is a tour of Grant Gibson’s teen bedroom design in the ELLE DECOR Showhouse…

Last week the San Francisco Design Center {SFDC} hosted Culinarium 2010 which celebrated the center of every home, the kitchen . Over the course of three days there were kitchen design keynotes and seminars by renowned designers along with cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs. In the SFDC’s Galleria atrium, Christopher Peacock Home built out a spectacular fully functioning kitchen featuring Silestone quartz countertops, Ann Sacks tile backsplash, Miele appliances and Toshiba high-tech flat screens. The entire kitchen was assembled in two days! This isn’t the first time Christopher Peacock Home has built display kitchens like this; In partnership with House Beautiful, he built the 2008 Kitchen of the Year in Rockefeller Plaza and built the kitchen for Oprah’s television stage set in 2009.

House Beautiful Editor-in-Chief, Newell Turner {far left} lead the panel discussion “The Kitchen: The New American Living Room.” Turner started the discussion explaining that kitchens are no longer detached from the design story. From family meals, to kids’ homework, to entertaining. The kitchen is the hub and the “new” living room. He also added that today’s kitchen is made to be more personal, comfortable and technologically advanced. The panel included Christopher Peacock, Founder & Designer of Christopher Peacock Home {middle left}, Michael Merritt, Director of Merchandising Ann Sacks {middle right} and David Karigaca, Sales & Builder Division Manager, Miele {far right}.

Christopher Peacock had the cabinets built in walnut stained in a dark brown. The cabinet doors are recessed and kept simple. The cabinetry is dressed up with hardware by Christopher Peacock Home. The oversized pulls in nickel are especially beautiful. The gorgeous backsplash, eastern star by Ann Sacks is “artwork” in the space and the starting point for the kitchen’s design. The Turkish inspired pattern features stainless steel and rich chocolate tiles. The geometric pattern was originally smaller, but Ann Sacks custom adjusted the size to meet Peacock’s vision.
The large kitchen island topped with Silestone quartz showcases Miele appliances and a thick striped wooden cutting board.

Speaking of appliances, David Karigaca of Miele said that their steam ovens are in demand. I want one! He explained that Miele appliances are made with “clean touch steel” and that they wipe clean with a simple rag {no harsh stainless steel cleaners needed}.

One of the most talked about features in the kitchen was the refrigerator and wine refrigerator combo by Miele. Each a separate unit, it was Peacock’s vision to combine the two in this San Francisco kitchen so near to the famous wine country.

Inside the wine refrigerator, the folks at Miele has shelves made in walnut to coordinate with the rest of the kitchen. The lighting inside both the refrigerators excited Newell Turner. It is indeed elegant and innovative {helps keep the temp in the units constant}. In addition, the cutting-edge Miele appliances are self-diagnosing and will send a homeowner an email if their is a problem, repair, or maintenance needed. Truly amazing.

culinarium nesting newbies hors d'oeuvres for entertaining
Renaissance woman and chef, Lea McIntosh of Nesting Newbies lead a cooking demonstration on how to create upscale hors d’oeuvres for entertaining. She taught her no-fail techniques to blogger Jeanine Hays of AphroChic {pictured right}. Together the two created three simple, delicious and sure fire winning hors d’oeuvres: Pear Muscat Marmalade {recipe here}, Medjool Dates Stuffed With Goat Cheese {seriously easy} and Truffle Honey Holiday Baked Brie. Yum.
Here is the recipe for the Truffle Honey Holiday Baked Brie:
Ingredients:
1 sheet puff pastry
1 tbsp salted butter {melted”}
2 tbsp pecan pieces
1 tbsp white truffle oil
2 tbsp honey
1 eight oz. wheel brie

Method:
1. Defrost puff pastry for approximately 15 minutes and unfold onto a baking sheet covered with parchment.
2. Ina small bowl, combine butter, pecan pieces, white truffle oil and honey; set aside.
3. Place brie in middle of pastry; pull flaps of dough up around edges to top of cheese, pressing dough against side of brie and gathering together at the top.
4. Before sealing dough flaps, pour honey mixture over brie right before squeezing together excess dough and tie with a piece of kitchen twine.

Speaking of food, Bob Chin and Sonu Mathew of Benjamin Moore talked about the “Social Palette – how trends, social media and palates influence color.” it was a beautifully rich presentation tying our passions for food and color. The mouth-watering photo of a chocolate tart is from Chef Tyler Florence’s new book, “Tyler Florence Family Meal: Bringing People Together Never Tasted Better.” It was so fun getting to meet Sonu too. Her blog, Living in Color with Sonu has been a favorite design blog of mine. Be sure to drop by for some serious color inspiration.
Culinarium 2010 ended on a spirited note with “The Art of the Cocktail” featuring Perry’s bartenders and the San Francisco 40-year institution’s signature cocktails. All proceeds of the event will benefit the Design Trade Resources Association.
I can’t wait to see what is in store for Culinarium 2011!

Designer Bathrooms: Vanity and Sink Styles for All Tastes

Updating your bathroom? Today’s bath vanities and sinks are in many cases the focal point in the room, but with so many styles to choose from the selection process can be overwhelming. To help inspire you and narrow down your options, here’s a variety of bathroom vanity and sink styles.
In this gorgeous master bath, Designer Robert Young features an ivory cabinet vanity with an X-mullion glass-front center door that is beautifully repeated in the transom. The vanity’s soft pewter Corian countertop is a perfect choice with the backsplash tiles in pewter, charcoal and cream tones. Love, love, love!

Fit for a queen. In this opulent guest bath designed by San Francisco-based designer Kendall Wilkinson hangs a stunning  Venetian mirror above a mirrored vanity sink {converted from a chest of drawers?}. The bath’s feminine look is accentuated with walls in a sweet lavender walls. The soft color is carried over from the adjacent bedroom’s wallpaper.
To open up a smaller bath visually, a simple pedestal sink is a great option. In this traditional bathroom featured in House Beautiful, a pedestal sink and faucets by Kohler are paired with clean subway tiles. A recessed Kohler medicine cabinet flanked by Somerson sconces from Pottery Barn helps finish off the clean look.
Also featured in House Beautiful, this chic bathroom by designer Jay Jeffers showcases a double sink by Waterworks that allows the gorgeous floor to ceiling glass tiles design to take center stage. To complete the retro look, Jeffers adds deco mirrors from Pottery Barn.

In this playful, contemporary bathroom, design Linda Humphrey places a pair of white porcelain vessel sinks atop a zinc covered vanity. The open shelf keeps the vanity from being too visually heavy, while the natural woven baskets help organize bath essentials.

Brooke Giannetti of Velvet & Linen designed this romantic powder room in her home. The vanity was created from a console table {reproduction from Chelsea Textiles} and was topped with a stunning marble sink. The wall mounted faucet was the spout from her garden fountain!

This contemporary bathroom by New York-based designer, Amanda Nisbet has been featured on Simplified Bee before – Layer it – Bathroom Lighting Design, but also wanted to include it in this post. Nisbet places two “Chalkstripe” vanities by Kohler side-by-side. For a seamless look, each vanity is covered with “Blizzard” Caesarstone Quartz. The simple cabinet fronts with square keyhole apertures keep the look clean, while concealing the storage area.

In this sweet bath, also by Amanda Nisbet features a contemporary wall-mounted porcelain sink {perfect for smaller sized bathrooms}. Known to mix styles effortlessly, Nisbet pairs the sink with a traditional damask wall paper, sleek modern shelf and contemporary scone lighting.

In this small bath, designer Victoria Neale selected the perfect sized vanity with bowed front. The petite vanity, painted the same white as the trim, even provides storage under the sink. The elongated mirror echos the room’s window, while the bright green walls and a checked valance coordinates beautifully with the color scheme in the little girl’s bedroom next door.
In this Moorish inspired bath featured in Traditional Home, the handsome dark wooden vanity is paired with a contrasting marble top. The vanity details are beautifully mimicked in the room’s arches, windows and custom chandelier.
In this light and airy bath Atlanta interior designer Kay Douglass mixes old and new elements. Two modern rectangular sinks were paired with a vintage wood table to create a vanity. It is the gorgeous stand alone tub however, that steals the show in this bath. Love how Douglass converts mercury-glass pendant lights into sconces that hang above the rustic mirrors.
I first saw this gorgeous powder room by designer Jim Howard on Things That Inspire. The  black stone wall mounted wall sink and faucets are tucked back into the contrasting crisp white walls.
This double sink vanity is featured in a traditional master bath also designed by Jim Howard. The stately vanity with detailed wood carving is exquisite and reminds me of an antique dresser. The twin sinks and mirrors add delicate feminine touches that balance the look and don’t allow the heavy vanity to over-power the space.
Did you find a bath vanity or sink style you love?
