San Francisco Decorator Showcase: Modern Kitchen Pantry

Although this year’s Decorator Showcase in San Francisco has come to a close, I wanted to show you some details in the “Modern Kitchen Pantry” designed by Tinsley Hutson-Wiley and Allison Bloom. The design duo was tasked with designing a new kitchen while leaving the old one in tact. The is result is simply beautiful.

Just off the formal dining room, this secondary kitchen was envisioned to be a space to prep for dinner, grab afternoon snack or enjoy a cup of tea. The lone window overlooks the San Francisco Bay and route ships would take importing tea and spices. Paneling covers a wall that had to stay and a large tone on tone Union Jack was painted as a nod to teatime. Open shelving allows this galley kitchen feel larger and airy.

The designers hung two beautiful geometric pendants in ebony by Ralph Lauren and painted the floors white.

White ceramic tile with dark contrasting grout covers the opposite wall. The existing countertops needed to be preserved and were covered with zinc.

The leather pulls on the cabinets are the absolute best!

The design team created a spot for tea by the window and hung wooden bread and cutting boards on the wall. Love this!
burlap curtain pantry
A pantry for tea, spices and snacks is built at the far end of the kitchen. A single floor-length burlap drape is the perfect touch and complements the burlap Roman shade on the opposite window.

It’s a small detail, but I loved how the designers placed fresh cooking herbs in simple white vases by the stove-top.

Teatime anyone?

San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2012 – Sneak Peek

With breathtaking views, box beamed ceilings and a double-curved grand staircase, the historic mansion at 2020 Jackson Street in the coveted Pacific Heights neighborhood is this year’s San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The Classic Revival home was designed by Julius Krafft and built in 1902 by Wells Fargo Bank President Isaias Hellman as a wedding gift to his daughter. However, after the 1906 earthquake and fire, the 11,500 square foot home was the temporary headquarters of Wells Fargo.

This year’s Showcase features a roster of both seasoned and emerging designers. Wallpaper, neutral color palettes and extraordinary light fixtures were design trends that kept repeating from room to room.   Here’s a sneak peek at some of the beautiful spaces:

With over 30 rooms, I couldn’t possibly cover it all in today’s post. I will dive into some of the rooms in more detail over the next coupe weeks – so stay tuned!
If you are in the San Francisco area, I encourage you to tour this exquisite home. It will be open to the public from April 28 – May 28 {Tuesday through Sundays}. For more information and to purchase tickets, go here. It’s all for a great cause too and  benefits the San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program.

Yes or No to Carrara Marble Countertops in the Kitchen?

adler carrara marble white kitchen designer

Carrara marble. Quarried in the Italian province of Carrara, this gorgeous stone is used to make tiles, tabletops and countertops in homes around the world. Carrara marble is becoming more and more popular in all-white kitchens like this one by trend-setter designer, Jonathan Adler.

Carrara marble, like other marbles is porous. Because of its light color it is more likely to show stains than other marbles and stones. It also needs regular care in order to maintain its beautiful surface. In addition, cleaning Carrara and other types of marble must be done properly with a pH-balanced stone cleaner. To learn more about cleaning marble, go here.

We love the look, but is the maintenance worth it? I ask the question because a client of mine {with three young ones} is considering Carrara marble countertops in her kitchen and has received strong advice both for and against. I’d love to hear from designers and home owners who have experience using Carrara marble countertops in the kitchen… thumbs up or down?

It’s also not too late to enter to win a $50 gift certificate to fab stationary store, Minted.com – go here.
