Interior Design Trend :: Ferns

1940's banana leaf wallpaper in Beverly Hills Hotel

Leafy botanical patterns are clearly trending right now. The banana leaf motif made famous by Harry Hinson’s iconic 1940’s Martinique wallpaper that’s all over the Beverly Hills Hotel is making a huge comeback. From home to fashion, the classic pattern is showing up everywhere. Even on iPhone covers (the one below is by Milly).

Although not as popular as the banana leaf, another trendy little green plant is the fern. This shade loving plane is much more refined in nature than it’s broad leaf friend, yet is also a fresh take on the color of the year. Over the past year I’ve noticed more and more fern patterns in interiors, like this bedroom designed by Tom Sheerer.

I’ve pulled together a few beautiful home decor items featuring ferns:

Of course there is nothing like adding a live fern or two to your home. They help naturally purify the air and Lauren from Pure Style Home swears they are the easiest plant to keep (this is her former living room above). If you are curious as to which variety of fern may be best indoors, BHG has a great article discussing their favorites.

On a final note, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families effected by the horrific terrorist attack in Boston on Monday. I feel as if our nation’s wound from 9/11 has been torn open. May we all strive for peace within and with one another.

Design Reveal :: Traditional Boys Bedroom

Do you remember this client’s traditional boy’s bedroom with the vintage airplane art? Today I’m excited to share images of his brother’s bedroom. It too is traditional in style and super cute.

The bedding, all from Serena & Lily set the blue, orange and green color palette for the room.  Benjamin Moore’s Paradise View was selected for the walls. It’s bright, beachy and energetic.

boys bedroom art cityscapes // Simplified Bee

A trio of cityscape graphics printed on natural wood by Petit Collage were hung above the bed. Skylines of the families’ favorite cities – Paris, New York and San Francisco were selected. I love how the artwork adds a personal touch, while pulling the color scheme together too!

kids bedside book holder rack

A simple, yet functional book rack was hung beside the bed. A great way to organize books and magazines if you have a tight space like this!

boys bedroom toy storage and pin board // Simplified Bee

As parents know, toys can take over a child’s bedroom. Here, a shelving unit keeps the toys stored neatly in bins and orange baskets. A large cork board hangs above and is great for displaying kid’s art, awards and party invitations.

A pair of star hook for hats, backpacks and coats flank the toy storage unit. Hooks are a great way to keep these items off the floor!

I hoped you enjoyed this peek into my client’s home!

Have a great day!

Interior Designer, Angie Hranowsky’s Home + Weekend Reads

I’ve long been a fan of Charleston, South Carolina-based  interior designer, Angie Hranowky. The former graphic designer mixes pattern and color effortlessly. I especially like Angie’s style because it feels so personal, inviting and organic. When I heard that her new pad (a charming historic 1850’s home) was being featured in the latest Lonny Magazine, I just knew I’d love it. And indeed I did. Angie’s renting the home which has it’s challenges for anyone (including designers), yet she pulls it off amazingly. As you will see the window treatment, wall paint and lighting fixtures she selected make a huge impact in the space. In the article, Angie gives great tips on making a rental your own.

It’s Friday… one of my favorite days of the week. Over the weekend I’ll be diving into more shelter magazines and blogs. I thought I’d share a few links to blog articles I enjoyed this past week.
