Beautiful Efficient Laundry Rooms

Laundry. There is no getting around the task, but it can be tackled many ways. Popular approaches include one load per day, one day for all or separate loads for each person in your household. My family likes to have “folding parties” where the kids fold their own clothing. In any case, test out the different approaches and see what works best for your family. For more ideas Circle of Moms just published tips for an efficient laundry routine that you may find helpful.

Laundry rooms of course need to be functional first and foremost, but there is no reason why they can’t be beautiful too. Personally I gravitate toward all white laundry rooms with a hint of color, pattern and texture that can be played out in tile backsplash, flooring or window treatment. Here are some beautiful laundry rooms that would make the task more fun!

San Francisco Decorator Showcase: Modern Kitchen Pantry

Although this year’s Decorator Showcase in San Francisco has come to a close, I wanted to show you some details in the “Modern Kitchen Pantry” designed by Tinsley Hutson-Wiley and Allison Bloom. The design duo was tasked with designing a new kitchen while leaving the old one in tact. The is result is simply beautiful.

Just off the formal dining room, this secondary kitchen was envisioned to be a space to prep for dinner, grab afternoon snack or enjoy a cup of tea. The lone window overlooks the San Francisco Bay and route ships would take importing tea and spices. Paneling covers a wall that had to stay and a large tone on tone Union Jack was painted as a nod to teatime. Open shelving allows this galley kitchen feel larger and airy.

The designers hung two beautiful geometric pendants in ebony by Ralph Lauren and painted the floors white.

White ceramic tile with dark contrasting grout covers the opposite wall. The existing countertops needed to be preserved and were covered with zinc.

The leather pulls on the cabinets are the absolute best!

wooden cutting boards hung kitchen
The design team created a spot for tea by the window and hung wooden bread and cutting boards on the wall. Love this!
burlap curtain pantry
A pantry for tea, spices and snacks is built at the far end of the kitchen. A single floor-length burlap drape is the perfect touch and complements the burlap Roman shade on the opposite window.

It’s a small detail, but I loved how the designers placed fresh cooking herbs in simple white vases by the stove-top.

Teatime anyone?

San Francisco Showcase: Her Office by Catherine Kwong

On the second level just off the master suite at the 2012 San Francisco Decorator Showcase, interior designer, Catherine Kwong creates an elegant, contemporary and très chic home office. The room’s design was inspired by San Francisco’s fashion bloggers. “I set out to create a dream office – complete with pinup boards for tear sheets and look books and, of course, a custom closet to display a truly inspirational wardrobe”  Kwong adds.

The stunning “Cortes” desk by Julian Chichester is wrapped in hand-dyed black vellum and sits on a gilded steel base. Adding a pop of color, Kwong pairs this desk with an orange 1960s “Bird” Chair designed by Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm. Luxe upholstered wall is Holly Hunt’s “Two Sides: Charcoal” and Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain blanket the walls and create a dramatic backdrop. While a large photograph, “Backstage at Pierre Balmain – Paris, 1954 #7” by Mark Shaw and a chandelier by Blackman Cruz demand a second look.

Mixing a little old with the new, Kwong places a 1920’s French art deco lamp designed by Eileen Gray and a chrome and 1940’s black letter holder on the desk.

Though the grand sofa, large upholstered screen and large flat-screen television {encased in a two-way mirror – brilliant!} take center stage, smaller details such as the grey faux hair on hide wallcovering {to muffle sound}, appliqued upholstery on a wing-chair and the elegant silver and marble side tables by French designer, Christian Liaigre do not go unnoticed {below}.

Here’s a closer look at one of the the fabulous horn wall scones {don’t know who designed them}, Roman Ring floor lamp by Holly Hunt and faux hide wallcovering {begging to be touched} by Donghia.
Paul Ferrante Console Table
I love the juxtaposition here of the iron console {by Paul Ferrante} and the organic root sculpture tucked underneath.

And one more look at the hi-tech TV and mirror by The Art of TV. It certainly solves the solution of how to hide those not so attractive flat screens! Don’t you love it?
There is still time to tour this lovely Pacific Heights estate. The showcase is open until May 28, 2012.
