Book Review & Giveaway :: The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas

Recently I received a copy of Country Living’s The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas. Indeed it’s a little square book measuring only 7 x 7 inches, but don’t let the size fool you. This pint sized edition is loaded with big inspiration. It features a hand-picked collection of the magazine’s best advice (and how to instruction) on ways to organize, decorate or add a personal touch to your space. There’s even a chapter for gardeners giving smart secrets for growing lush, abundant landscapes. This book would make a fabulous house warming gift!

San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2013 :: Writer’s Retreat

Fresh, airy and chic describes the Writer’s Retreat designed by Kriste Michelini for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2013. The light filled, attic room on the Pacific Height mansion’s third floor features whitewashed floors, grasscloth walls and chic furnishings.

A platform bed with vibrant mix of patterned throw pillows (many of which are from Caitlin Wilson) and whimsical Kandy wallcovering in Brit Pop by Elitis is perhaps my favorite spot in the room.

Interior Design Tips by BluLabel Bungalow: Small Spaces and The Luxury of Less

Today I am thrilled to have Erika Ward of Atlanta-based, Erika Ward Interiors as a guest blogger.  Erika is passionate about interior design and it shows on her lovely blog, BluLabel Bungalow. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting Erika while in New York to watch The Nate Show. She is delightful! I also think you will love this post… tip #2 is my favorite 🙂
In the House Beautiful July/August 2010 issue, they pose the question, “Is Small the New Big?” Initially, I was irritated by the question simply because it sounded like yet another trend. In 7-10 years will we once again be in love with sprawling estates?
Naturally, small is the new big when so many are downsizing due to current economic conditions. While everyone is not in financial straits some have chosen to reduce their living space in order to be more ecologically responsible. The article examines three homes, the largest a mere 650 square feet, and concludes that living large is all about quality and not quantity.
When visiting potential clients, I find they have enough furniture and accessories to furnish two homes. In fact, most of us have more than we really need. My first inclination is to grab a box and begin removing excess from the walls and mantels, but I know better than that. We are sensitive about our stuff, aren’t we? Instead I offer the following suggestions, applicable to both large and small homes, when practicing “The Luxury of Less” principle:

Edit Your Space
Perform a “healthy purge” and keep only what you love. If you can’t bear to part with your knick-knacks, consider a wall display or arranging them together in a curio cabinet. This works best when you have a collection of one or two items.
Seek Help With Organization
Living with what you need requires you to know what you need. Perform an assessment of each space noting the function of each room. If an item in the room does not serve a relevant need, then remove it. Be sure that each remaining item “has a home” or an assigned place when not in use.
Choose Dual Purpose Furniture
Shop smarter. Choose furnishing that serve two purposes, i.e. a ottoman that serves as additional seating as well as a coffee table.
Seek Help With Space Planning
The wrong furniture arrangement can kill a space.  Employ designer tricks to find optimal seating arrangements and traffic flow in the room.  The House Beautiful article lends two pieces of advice:
  1. Keep the seating arrangments pulled away from the walls. Creating spaces beyond the furniture adds volume to the room.
  2. Use furniture with exposed legs. This creates air space and a feeling of openness you cannot achieve with upholstery that goes to the floor.
Buy the Highest Quality You Can Afford, Fake the Rest
Your budget is small, but you splurge on your dream wallpaper. You don’t have money left for a custom bed so make one. There are countless tutorials on the web that guide you through the steps of making an upholstered headboard. Give your headboard an expensive look with tufting and/or framing.

Inject Interest with Color and Patterns
Using colors and patterns provides eye candy and really draws you into a space. Painted floors, playful wallpapers, artwork, and soft fabrics help to bring the room to life and establish the personality of its owner.

Do you find satisfaction in living with less?
How have your made your life simpler this year?

Top Ten Ideas for Decorating Your Apartment Rental

Anyone who has rented an apartment desires to feel comfortable, no matter how large or small the space. Decorating an apartment can be difficult as there is often little to work with and only so much change allowed. Every apartment complex is different. Some complexes resemble the styles of Pleasanton apartments in California, with varying sizes, yet functional and luxurious. Others reflect the high class busy lifestyle of Manhattan apartments, often in a one-room loft layout. Whatever the location or floor plan, remember these top ten ideas for making the best out of your space and making it your own.

1. Use multi-functional furniture – For small spaces, a futon sofa bed will give your guests a place to sit and a place for you to sleep at night all in one piece of furniture.

2. Purchase storage type furniture – Beds, couches, and loveseats are available with extra storage options. Storing away miscellaneous items can de-clutter a space and make it appear larger.

3. Wall hangings – Most rentals do not allow paint on the walls. Unique wall hangings can add the expression you are looking for without damaging the walls. Large panels with fabric in your color of choice will work for any wall.

4. Minimal window coverings – Many apartments lack windows as they are connected to other units in the building. Do not cover the windows with excess fabric or curtains. This will block any natural light coming in. Practice minimalism on the windows.

5. Floor lamps – Don’t underestimate the power of adequate lighting. Invest in a few floor lamps and bring your apartment to life. All of your decorating will be evident in a well-lighted room.

6. Add warmth with plants – Studio and loft apartments can be a little “drab” and cold. Add warmth to a space with a few green plants. Plants also help to clean up the air in your apartment, which can be beneficial for apartments in pollution-filled cities.

7. Use room dividers for open spaces – One room apartments can be segmented into separate areas through the use of room dividers, folding screens, or curtains suspended from the ceiling.

8. Pay attention to the small details – Limited budgets mean limited decorating. Small touches such as adding new light switch covers or cabinet hardware can make a big difference without stressing your pocketbook. Make sure to keep those covers and hardware because you will have to replace them when you leave.

9. Create one focal point for each room – Every room should have at least one item that centers the room and makes everything around it pale in comparison. This could be a fireplace, a painting, a statue, or even a large piece of furniture.

10. Mirrors – Use mirrors to reflect light and create the look of a bigger space. Hanging mirrors on the wall or balancing them on the floor against a focal wall can add elegance and style to any room.

The most important thing to remember is to relax. Be open to new ideas and take the limits off of what you think your space should look like. Get creative and turn that apartment into the home of your dreams.
