One of the spaces that was renovated during our last construction project was the powder room. It sits toward the from of the house and is in parallel with the staircase – making the room long and narrow. It has been decorated several times since 1940 and the last being in the late 60s. The blue toilet and sink coordinated with the wallpaper which featured cherubs. Gold wall sconces with crystals flanked a mirror that was removed before we bought the home. Shear drapery that was full of dust covered a large window. All of it needed to go.

The space was completely gutted and re-plumbed. From head to toe the room was transformed into a light and airy space. Check it out now…

The wallpaper – Pajarita (black) by Laundry Studio for Hygge & West features whimsical birds and was my first design selection for the bathroom. The delicate, yet energetic pattern was inspired by the various murals of birds seen throughout Mexico City. I also love that birds symbolize freedom. Black concrete hexagon tiles and a steel mirror were paired with the wallpaper. To flank the mirror, I selected understated, yet classic wall sconces. A top-down Roman shade in white match-stick was selected to bring in the light and provide privacy. The black and white ju ju hat hanging above the toilet is just plain fun and a nod to the birds. The blue sink was the perfect scale for the room, so I had it re-painted in white to match the new toilet by Toto. The faucet hardware needed to be replaced, but was able to reuse the original toilet paper and towel rack hardware.

Favorite Posts of 2016

As I welcome 2017 with open arms, I also reflect back on this past year. As you may know, we moved into a 1940s home that desperately needed a face-lift, so for the last year and a half we have been in the process of various renovation projects. In fact much of the last year we were in the mist of several projects which included the kitchen & great room, three bathrooms, and a laundry room. Each project brought challenges and joy along the way – some which I have already shared like the process of designing our master bathroom & closet and guest bathroom. Once I catch my breathe and get some photo taken, I’m planning on revealing some of the other projects we undertook in the upcoming months.

Wishing you a very happy, healthy 2017!

Book Review :: A House in the Country

Book Review // A House in the Country // via @simplifiedbee

What happens when a renowned architect and an A-list interior designer collaborate to build their dream home? The magical result is chronicled in a must have new decor book, A House in the Country which invites us in the one-of-a-kind Greek Revival-inspired house of Peter Pennoyer (architect) and Katie Ridder (designer). The creative power couple spent years searching for just the right property and in 2009 found a ranch house on six-and-a-half acres in Millbrook, New York. With more than 300 photos and illustrations, Peter and Katie invite us into their home and share the story behind the transformation. The book is simply organized into three sections – Exterior, Interior and Garden. It’s evident from just the first few page turns, that the home’s architecture and interior design are totally in sync. Don’t let the exterior traditional architecture fool you either – the home’s interior is colorful and full of modern touches. Katie’s bold use of color including pink and purple – beautifully connects and defines the spaces in Peter’s open-floor plan. In addition, the home’s garden is sensational and I love how the book dives into the smallest details including plant selection.

This home is extraordinary and the book captures it amazingly. Here is just a sampling of the stunning images.

One Room Challenge Spring 2016 :: Favorites

The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur. My kids are wrapping up their school year, we have started demoing the kitchen/great room and I’ve starting taking training classes for our puppy (see image below). I’m also quite relieved that the One Room Challenge Spring 2016 edition is complete. The experience was so much fun, yet exhausting. I’m so thankful to have worked with Linda from Calling it Home who created it all and with the generous event sponsors including, allmodernbassett mirrorbellacorcaroline cecil textilescrystoramadecoratorsbestfarrow & balljoss & mainloweslucent light shopluxholdupsminted.comwaiting on martha, and  waterworks.

A huge thank you to you. I’m overwhelmed by the supportive and loving comments, emails, and thumbs up you’ve sent my way. Many thanks!!!

The guest suite by pencil and paper blog is one I’d love in my own home. I adore the blush pink walls and chinoiserie touches.

pink girl's bedroom // sketch 42

How sweet is this pink bedroom the Nicole from Sketch 42 designed for her sister? Loving the skirted table in Miles Redd fabric.

colorful den // the pink clutch // one room challenge

Paige Minear of The Pink Clutch transformed her already beautiful den into a colorful oasis. There is so much eye candy in this space from the wallpapered bookcases to the gorgeous upholstery. Love all of the layers.
