ELLE DECOR Designer Showhouse San Francisco: Guest Bedroom Design by Suzanne Tucker

Yesterday marked the final day of ELLE DECOR’s first-ever Designer Showhouse in San Francisco. The stately 5,000 square-foot Mediterranean mansion in the heart of the historic St. Francis Wood neighborhood was renovated from top to bottom. In addition, the interior was transformed by eleven of the San Francisco’s most talented interior designers – all of which were handpicked by ELLE DECOR.

Suzanne Tucker Elle Decor Bedroom Twin

Today I will be showing images of the serene bedroom & bathroom created by interior design icon, Suzanne Tucker. Suzanne’s award winning design firm, Tucker & Marks is one of the most recognized in the United States. Architectural Digest honored Suzanne Tucker as one of the AD100 Top Designers of the World, the Robb Report named her “The Best of the Best in Interior Design” and the list continues. In addition to designing beautiful spaces, in 2009 Suzanne authored a book, Rooms to Remember – The Classic Interiors of Suzanne Tucker and earlier this year she launched a luxurious textile line, Suzanne Tucker Home

In the ELLE DECOR Designer Showhouse, Suzanne selected a tranquil aqua palette with crisp whites, greens and yellows for the guest room retreat. The bedroom, bath and terrace are set back in the quietest upper corner of the house. “My design speaks to today’s mix in decorating – a stylish blend of casual chic, a dash of traditional, a dose of contemporary, all creating a transitional, timeless livability” said Suzanne.
The vintage beds hold special meaning to Suzanne. Originally Michael Taylor made them for San Franciscan fashion icon, Nan Kempner in 1951 because it was between graduating from College and marrying Tommy Kempner in 1952. Nan’s “step-mother” felt Suzanne should have them given her connection with Michael Taylor and that Suzanne knew Nan. So she graciously gave them to Suzanne a few months ago, right before the ELLE DECOR Showhouse opened.
Between the twin beds Suzanne placed a contemporary lacquered white bedside table by Bungalow 5. The three drawer table is topped with crisp white roses, a collection of sweet glass bottles and a ceramic table lap with scale detailing by Sue Fisher King. A small Tiffany’s blue box welcomes guests in style.

A crisp white 1940’s Parzinger dresser is positioned opposite the beds. A feminine ruffled mirror is hung center over the dresser and flanked by a pair of vintage Murano glass table lamps from DWM Maloos.

Luxurious crisp white, green and yellow bedding by Scheuer Linens are fresh and inviting. Suzanne tops the bed with Madeline Weinrib’s chic decorative pillows – “Celery Luce” and “Green Sunder.”

Suzanne Tucker lucite table chair bedroom

This early craftsman turned wood chair is delightful and brings more natural wood tones into the space. Suzanne pairs the chair with a fun , clear Murano glass drinks table. A series of Citrus Cotton Woven  area rug runners by Dash & Albert were combined to cover the dark hardwood flooring.
Suzanne Tucker Elle Decor Bathroom
In the bathroom Suzanne covers the walls in a cheery yellow and white Chou-Chou wallpaper by Sister Parish Design. Bath fixtures and tile are kept contemporary and sleek. Two half cylinder sconces – Calliope in polished nickel by Circa Lighting – flank the simple mirror. The sink is softened with a custom pleated skirt. The rich, dark corner shelves are an antique and made of bamboo.

Just off of the bedroom sits a lovely private terrace. The half round faux bois table by Oly Studio is placed just behind a pair of outdoor lounge chairs and ottoman by Michael Taylor Designs. The bamboo style and bronze finish contrasts beautifully with the Perrine in Leaf outdoor fabrics by Duralee. It is surrounded by white marble garden stool, hand-carved old stone Balinese basin and Chiang Mai Palace planter all from Living Green. Hmmm… I think all that is missing is a lovely cup of green tea and a book.
And just in case you missed it, here are tours of the ELLE DECOR Showhouse’s Living Room by Gary SpainTeen Girl’s Bedroom by Grant Gibson  and Master Bedroom and Bath by Jay Jeffers.
What do you like most about Suzanne Tucker’s guest room retreat?

Retro 70s Decor – Scottsdale Arizona Condo

My grandfather was from our nation’s heartland – Omaha, Nebraska. During the harsh Midwestern winters, he and his wife would migrate south to the Arizona desert. They purchased a condo in Scottsdale in 1973 and because it was the “model” it was professionally designed and furnished.

Recently the three bedroom / two bath condo was sold, but photos were taken of the interior and I thought they would be fun to share. My grandparents never remodeled and therefore it’s a time capsule back to the 70s.

Dark red 12″x12″ tiles floored the double door entryway which led to a small atrium.

Here is a view of the atrium from the living room. The retro shag lime green wall-to-wall carpet was installed in the living, dining and bedrooms.

The living room’s bright, yet cool mix of yellow, green and white was a very popular color scheme in the 70s. The brick wall and fireplace were all painted in neutral white allowing the colors to really pop. Floral patterns were also dominant during this era. The lovely yellow and white floral sofa was purchased for $819 – almost 40 years ago. And the green wing chair green was $219.

My favorite element in this room was the leather top writing desk in a Mediterranean Cherry. It cost $339 back in 1973. The handsome brass and alabaster bookends were $29.

Here is a view of the dining room that was open to the kitchen and living room. I am not positive, but I think the chairs were reupholstered at one point in time.

The round game table in a dark antique finish was in a third bedroom that served as the den. The lighting in this picture is not ideal, but these chairs with nailhead trim are upholstered in a fun retro crushed velvet orange are fantastic – the color is making a comeback.

The guest bedroom had two lovely twin beds each with matching floral quilts. I just loved the faux bamboo headboards in brushed lemon with white. The sweet night stand is also in the same finish.

The masterAlign Left bedroom showcased a beautiful king size bed in a gold and lime throw spread – gotta love the trim! I found it interesting that the stone wall was kept natural. My favorite elements in the room were the matching Italian Faience white table lamps and tufted yellow bench. Both are popular today.

Hope you enjoyed this retro condo tour – can’t you just hear John Travolta singing Stayin’ Alive?

Home Sweet – Willa Home

Recently I visited Willa Home, a lovely home and garden boutique in the Burlingame – near my home and just 30 minutes south of San Francisco. I hadn’t dropped by in nearly a year and was pleasantly surprised to see how the store has evolved. Elena Duggan, the original owner of Willa Home, recently partnered up with longtime friend Lisa Wilson, formerly of The Pickled Hutch. The store has been reinvented with a wonderful blend of vintage treasures and contemporary home décor. I love the fact that Willa Home offers a little something for everyone.

The boutique has lots of wonderful natural light from skylights, but you can’t help but notice the gorgeous lighting available including several vintage chandeliers hanging from the aqua ceiling. My favorite was this brass chandelier with turquoise glass tear-drops. It would look incredible in a bathroom setting above the tub.

I particularly liked the vintage glass bottle collection topped with beautiful jeweled crosses and sealife. Love the seahorse. In the rear of the store you’ll find gorgeous quilts and pillows. And here another delightful vintage glass & crystal chandelier caught my eye. Wouldn’t it be so sweet in a little girl’s room?

Lisa and Elena also do a fantastic job displaying their merchandise. Here is an example of a beautiful collection of white porcelain, red roses and a splash of aqua.

During my visit at Willa Home, I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa. She was delightfully supportive when I asked about writing an article about her store on my blog, told me about her own blog and gave me some great blogging advice. She also pointed about some darling vintage “bee” gift tags. Of course, I had to get them. Thanks Lisa!

Fellow blogger, Josephine at Red Thread posted a great interview with Lisa and included some incredible photos. Also a thank you to Rachel at Dwellings and Décor for inspiring me too!

When visiting the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, be sure to drop by Willa Home. You won’t be disappointed.
