Interior Design Trend :: Ferns

1940's banana leaf wallpaper in Beverly Hills Hotel

Leafy botanical patterns are clearly trending right now. The banana leaf motif made famous by Harry Hinson’s iconic 1940’s Martinique wallpaper that’s all over the Beverly Hills Hotel is making a huge comeback. From home to fashion, the classic pattern is showing up everywhere. Even on iPhone covers (the one below is by Milly).

Although not as popular as the banana leaf, another trendy little green plant is the fern. This shade loving plane is much more refined in nature than it’s broad leaf friend, yet is also a fresh take on the color of the year. Over the past year I’ve noticed more and more fern patterns in interiors, like this bedroom designed by Tom Sheerer.

I’ve pulled together a few beautiful home decor items featuring ferns:

Of course there is nothing like adding a live fern or two to your home. They help naturally purify the air and Lauren from Pure Style Home swears they are the easiest plant to keep (this is her former living room above). If you are curious as to which variety of fern may be best indoors, BHG has a great article discussing their favorites.

On a final note, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families effected by the horrific terrorist attack in Boston on Monday. I feel as if our nation’s wound from 9/11 has been torn open. May we all strive for peace within and with one another.

Great Quality Sofas :: 5 Favorite Sources

disclosure: This post contains an affiliate links, which means Simplified Bee receives commission if you make a purchase using this link.

interior design tip

I agree with interior designer, Graciela Rutkowski about splurging on your family room sofa. It’s a piece that will get tons of use and it’s worth investing in the right one for your family. Her quote has raised some good questions too. One in particular from a Simplified Bee Facebook fan asking for recommendations on which retailers had the best quality sofas. I’ve narrowed down the long list to five of my favorite couches that are well made, stylish and affordable – all of which you can purchase online.

best sofa brands - Serena & Lily

Serena & Lily carries high quality upholstered furniture including sofas. My favorite is the Miramar. It’s a great casual, yet chic style. Serena & Lily have tons of fabric options to choose from to get that custom look too!

best sofa brands online

Room & Board is a fave because of it’s wide selection and quality. The Loring sofa tops my list because of it’s timeless appeal, flared arm and tight back. Room & Board also offering a good selection of fabrics.

great quality sofas MG+BW

Known for state-of-the-art-construction, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams strive to deliver truly comfortable furniture. Their sofas are some of the best and most stylish. My personal fave of the day is the Blackwell. It has a traditional look I love.

best sofa retailers online

Horchow makes the list because they carry a wide selection of stylish brands (all top notch quality). The tufted back of this chic sofa by Bernhardt caught my eye and I love that it’s American made.

quality sofas online - west elmWest Elm makes my list because their price-point is so affordable. Their sofas are a great choice for the newlywed and family with tiny tots running around. West Elm has a terrific sofa selection, but my current fave is the Blake.  I particularly like the single seat cushion, tailored (but loose) back cushions and timeless look.

 Happy decorating!

Lonny Mag’s Latest and Black + White Decor

Lonny Mag’s March issue is here, gorgeous as ever and centered around designing for  kids and growing families. Love! It takes us on a tour of two family homes. The first is a retreat in Connecticut designed by Lisa Sherry. Then we tour the adorable Swedish home of Jennifer Jansch (creator of a reusable gift bag company). Although not kid-friendly, I also loved the tour of Editor-in-Chief’s Michelle Adam‘s new pad in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It’s a girl’s dream!

I know black and white is trending both on the fashion runways and in interiors. So I’ve pulled my favorites from Lonny’s latest to celebrate the classic color combo.

I was surprised and bummed to learn Michelle is leaving Lonny. She has done such an amazing job creating the inspiring online magazine. Lonny has truly been a trail blazer and has changed the landscape of they way we view all shelter magazines. She will be missed! Can’t wait to find out what she has planned!
