Designer Mark Sikes Hollywood Hills Home

The latest Lonny Magazine tours the beautiful 1920s home of interior designer Mark D. Sikes located in Southern California’s iconic Hollywood Hills. The interior is chic, multi-layered and sensible. Sikes makes it look effortless and I’m swooning with every page turn.

“It doesn’t feel like a ‘decorated’ house. It’s very organic and open. In fact, that’s the first change I made to the house after we bought it. I had all the doors rehung to open out.'” – Mark Sikes via Lonny

Client Design Reveal :: Kitchen Design Transformation

Today I’m excited to be sharing a client’s eat-in kitchen that was recently updated. I’ve provided before and after pictures so you can see the kitchen design transformation. It’s quite dramatic.

Kitchen Design Update with Carrara Marble Countertops

In the kitchen the counters and backsplash were replace with gorgeous carrara marble. The gray veining is really beautiful. The island originally didn’t allow for seating, so we extended the marble and provided space for three barstools. The base of the island was painted a stoney gray to provide contrast with the white marble.

Other updates in the kitchen included new cabinetry hardware, a pair of pendant lights and an under-mount sink in stainless steel.  The cabinetry, flooring and appliances all remained the same.

To maximize the space in the dining area, I had a custom L shaped bench created (with storage drawers of course!). It is topped with a kid-friendly vinyl cushion in a metallic silver.  A rectangular trestle table and bright yellow ladder back chairs were also added so that the whole family can enjoy the space.

The family was thinking of moving to a new home, but after the kitchen was updated they decided to stay. It makes me so happy to think I helped a client love their home.

I have more pictures of this clients home that I’ll be sharing soon!

A big thank you to Michaela and Summer for helping me with the photoshoot!

My Kitchen Nook Reveal

Kitchen Nook with Manuel Canovas Wallpaper

Just off our kitchen, sits a nook where kids study, draw and eat snacks.  I’ve been drooling over the fresh green and white Trellis wallpaper by Manuel Canovas for some time and it was my starting point.

To stand-up to my kids, I had the bench cushions made in solid Kelly green patent leather – it’s topped with a crisp Bali pillow by Thomas Paul.  The light pendant by Arteriors has a sunny yellow interior that pulls from the sunflower oil painting by my Grandmother, which hangs in the space.  A grouping of framed art that my kids created is also proudly hung in the space and can easily be swapped out to feature their latest masterpiece.

To add texture, but no compete with the heavy patterned wallpaper, I selected a simple tortoise bamboo roman shade.  To maximize the space, I also hung a chalkboard that displays my kid’s art, party invitations and school papers.

The bench and butcher-block table were custom built.  I love the pullout drawers because they provide so much storage.

DIY Art Tray with Wallpaper Detail

To corral the kids’ art supplies they use frequently, I painted a wooden tray and lined it with the Trellis wallpaper. Here’s how I did it and ideas for updating your own tray.

I love how this tiny space turned out. It’s now my favorite space in our home and one of the most used!
