2016 Decor Trends :: Mad for Plaid

Happy 2016! I hope you had a joyful, relaxing holiday. Although sick for a good week, I was able to enjoy a white Christmas in our new home. There is something so magical about quiet snow falling, a crackling fire and spending quality time with family. It was a wonderful way to end 2015.

With a look at the year ahead, I thought it would be fun to ask several interiors designers what decor trends they think will dominate in 2016. To kick off the series today is Northern California designer, Julie Rootes  who is predicting we will continue to be mad for plaid. I agree and am loving the revival in the classic pattern.

Even though plaid is trending big time in the fashion world from shirts to shoes to everything in between, plaid is holding its own in the world of interiors.  I find it can give the perfect kick to any space while still maintaining its traditional roots.  From a small accessory like a pillow to decorating an entire room – a la Scot Meacham Wood (image above via Traditional Home) – it packs the perfect punch. – Julie Rootes

One Room Challenge 2015 :: Decor Trends

Guess what? Last week my stair runner was installed! I’m so bummed it didn’t make the final One Room Challenge reveal, but it was totally worth the wait! I’m hoping to take a few shoots of it this week to share with you.

The install had me thinking of all the lovely designs produced for the One Room Challenge.  As I reflect back, a few decor trends were featured in a number of rooms. Here are the ones that caught my eye:

BUFFALO CHECK PLAID

Kimberly dressed the windows in her living room with a timeless and trendy buffalo check plaid. It’s a pattern that’s been a fashion favorite too!

STATEMENT WALLPAPER

Wallpaper has been trending for several years now, but it was hotter than ever in this season’s ORC. Cassandra used the most amazing statement wallpaper in her attic dressing room. Loving the chic pattern and colorway too!

LUCITE + BRASS
lucite & brass curtain rods

Lucite and brass have been trending for some time, but I love the combo. It popped up a couple times in the ORC. It’s perfect here as a curtain rod in Mackenzie’s guest bedroom too!

CHINOISERIE PATTERNS

Chinoiserie patterns were featured in several ORC rooms including my own Foyer! I swooned over the textiles and wallcoverings used throughout Paige’s kitchen.

Navajo patterns. Feather artwork. Indoor cactus. I know you’ve spotted them too. Southwestern decor is trending, but with an fresh modern twist. Timeless Native American patterns have inspired a new generation of textiles (like the rug below from Domain), flooring (like the tile above from Curbly) and home decor products that are being incorporated in a variety of dwellings from urban to rural. The earthy desert palettes with pops of bright color here and there is perfect to incorporate with modern and transitional furnishings for a chic boho look. southwest modern decor #cactus #pinksouthwest desert chic // decor trends
