Designer Mark Sikes Hollywood Hills Home

The latest Lonny Magazine tours the beautiful 1920s home of interior designer Mark D. Sikes located in Southern California’s iconic Hollywood Hills. The interior is chic, multi-layered and sensible. Sikes makes it look effortless and I’m swooning with every page turn.

“It doesn’t feel like a ‘decorated’ house. It’s very organic and open. In fact, that’s the first change I made to the house after we bought it. I had all the doors rehung to open out.'” – Mark Sikes via Lonny

It’s Here! :: West Elm Palo Alto

It’s no big secret that I’m a huge West Elm fan. I’ve selected their affordable designs which feature a mix of clean lines, natural textures and global accents for numerous client projects. So I was thrilled to hear that West Elm was opening a new retail store at the corner of University and Emerson in Palo Alto. Each West Elm store has it’s own regional look & feel and the Palo Alto store is no different. It’s earthy accents and trees take center stage. Twinkling holiday trees line the front window, while stacked logs as if ready for a winter’s fire are placed behind the register. In addition, the new store features collections of decorative accessories and art made by local Etsy artists (love).

The Palo Alto store’s door swung open to the public on October 8th and showcased the brand’s early Holiday assortment including vibrant textiles inspired by hues of nature and new furniture and tabletop for holiday entertaining. I had the opportunity to tour the beautiful store the day before the grand opening and wanted to share some pictures I took of the festive and inspirational displays…

I love that West Elm collaborates with outside designers and artists. It brings a freshness to the brand that keeps folks coming back season after season. For Holiday, these colorful geometric glass ornaments by ConfettiSystem has caught my eye.

Texas-based designer, Alyson Fox’s geometric pillows (above) and Italian designer, Allegra Hick’s hand-block quilt and bedding collection (below) were also standouts.

And how beautiful (& easy) are these paper flowers by British designer Sarah Campbell?

If you are in the Palo Alto area, you’ll have to drop by and see the beautiful new store for yourself!

Design Reveal :: Girls Shared Bedroom

A few weeks ago I had several of my design projects photographed by a talented Bay Area photographer, Summer of PlumLily. The day long shoot was fun, but I couldn’t have done it  without my fab summer intern, Michaela who helped style all of the rooms that day. A big thanks to both of you!

Today, I’m thrilled to reveal the first room to you. It’s a shared bedroom for a client’s two daughters who couldn’t agree on a color scheme (smile). The seven year old loves pink, while the ten year old loves purple. I found neutral territory by starting with matching crisp white bed linens and fretwork headboards.

Complimentary custom Euro shams and bolster pillows were created for each girl’s bed with their favorite colors in mind. Whimsical prints of a pink flamingo and purple seahorse were found on Etsy, framed and placed above each bed.

I love multi-functional pieces in a room, so a white lacquer mini Parsons desk was placed between the beds – it serves as a nightstand and study spot. A trio of orange and pink boxes provide a pop of color and help keep smaller school supplies organized. A clear ghost chair was selected because it didn’t add too much visual weight to the space.

The walls were painted a soft lavender, while a bold pink and white stripe area rug was selected for the floor – it’s cotton and small enough to throw in a standard washing machine – perfect for kids!

The dresser was painted a soft pink (Benjamin Moore’s Bermuda Pink) and topped with a fun bubble gum table lamp, antique mirror and whimsical abstract art by Michaela Noelle Designs. Don’t you love the abstract painting she created specifically for this space? If interested in learning more about Michaela’s artwork, email her directly at michaelawarner90@gmail.com.

An antique bench with vintage fabric is topped with throw pillows in fabric from LULU DK’s new children’s collection with Schumacher. Love!

Although a challenge to design at first, the room turned out beautifully and most importantly both girls love that it reflects their unique style.

All the best,

Cristin

Tailored Child’s Bedroom :: New Collection from Little House by Annette Tatum

Today Little House by Annette Tatum is releasing a new collection appropriately named, Tailored. The gorgeous line of baby and child bedding has classic style with bold, modern brushstrokes creating a timeless distinction that is never trendy and always beautiful. The collection’s captivating prints and kaleidoscope of colors are a great starting point in selecting a color palette for your child’s room. I’m also  loving The Tailored Collection because it can seamlessly weave into any style room.

“I’ve always felt that color is one of the most important aspects of a nursery or child’s room,” says Annette Tatum, creator of the Tailored Collection.

The Maiden and Cottage Furniture Collections are also new. With classic designs, clean lines and elegant details, both collections are made using hardwood and in the USA. Choose your applique, knobs and one of six paint colors designed to coordinate with the bedding collection. I’m really liking the stylish and multi-functional the Cottage Changing Table and Removable Tray in academy blue [below] – changing table in the nursery today, chest in the boy’s bedroom tomorrow!Classic changing table dresser - made in the USA

Little House fabrics sold by the yard / Annette Tatum

And for a completely unique look in your child’s bedroom, Little House fabrics are also available by the yard! Love it!

Speaking of children’s rooms, I recently helped pull together some nursery design ideas for design blogger, Dina and her baby-boy-to-be. It will be her second child and so I reused a lot of her existing furnishings and decor items, but added some new pieces with fun pops of turquoise. See it here.
