Weekend Reading :: Shelter Magazine Recommendations

Ah, the weekend. Perhaps you have something fun planned with family and friends, but hopefully you get some downtime to simply relax and recharge. For me, I enjoy reading shelter magazines (big surprise I’m sure!).  Here’s what I’ll be reading this weekend…

Matchbook Magazine - June Issue

Matchbook Magazine’s June issue (digital format) features a not to be missed house tour of design greats (and personal faves), John Robshaw and iomoi’s husband & wife team, Matthew Grenby and Irene Chen.

Can you tell which home is which? They are so different, but I love both styles!

Another online shelter magazine I’ll be reading is this month’s Rue. The issue is focusing on wedding and entertaining, so lots of inspiration for brides. It also features the charming apartment of recent interior design college graduate and my former intern, Michaela Noelle. It’s look into the urban LA studio she shares with a fellow design student. I love how they pulled off so much in such a tiny space. It’s a  fun, eclectic mix of styles.  So proud of Michaela!!!

And in case you missed it, you may want to check out the home tour of designer, Kelly Wearstler in last month’s Lonny Magazine. It’s so Kelly. The space is all glamour, but the images with her boys make it feel like a real home.

What will you be reading this weekend?

Peninsula Volunteers Decorator Show House :: The Card Room

Inspired by the preppy, glamorous style of 1960’s Palm Beach, San Francisco-based interior designer, Scot Meacham Wood of SMW Design has transformed a corner room for the Peninsula Volunteers Decorator Show House into a delightful Card Room. With stunning views of the pool, waterfall and magnificent Woodside hills, it’s the perfect spot for an afternoon bridge match, refreshing drink and good old fashion girl talk.

Using nearly 100 yards of fabric,  the room is tented from ceiling to floor in Lilly Pulitzer’s “Tail Lights” in emerald green (available at Lee Jofa).  Each of the four card tables are covered in “Happy Plaid” also by Lilly Pulitzer, topped with darling polished chrome lamps by Circa Lighting and circled with varied antique chairs. The grand chinoiserie secretary (love!) from Baker Furniture was placed opposite the French doors. It balances the r

A cheery yellow custom designed bar cart from the Gilded Stag  is stocked with summertime drinks. I love that this piece was a bit over-sized. It’s the right scale for the space.

Scot incorporates wonderful artwork throughout the space including photography by famed photographer Slim Aarons and several works from local photographer James Scott Geras.

Cheers to Scot!

And in case you missed it, here’s the Guest Bedroom for the show house.

San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2013 :: The Living Room

San Francisco Decorator Showcase Living Room Catherine Kwong

San Francisco based interior designer, Catherine Kwong designed an elegant, yet edgy living room for the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. While researching for a client, Kwong came across photos of Mick and Bianca Jagger in the 1970’s – they were young and wild. The iconic rock royalty couple inspired the living room’s design for the Showcase.

However, it’s the hand-painted floor takes center stage. Created by Stancil Studios, the free-spirited pattern was inspired by the paintings of Cy Twombly. It’s quite the juxtaposition to the ornate ceiling, marble fireplace and traditional architecture.

Teen Hangout Room–San Francisco Showcase

The Teen Only Hang Out Room by Emily Mughannam of Em Design Interiors at this year’s San Francisco Showcase was one of my favorites. Perhaps it’s because I dreamed of having a room like this when I was a teen.

The neutral over-sized sofa by Sofa U Love fits snug in one corner and is topped with playful throw pillows picking up on the room’s neon yellow, burnt orange and metallic accents. Emily custom made the trio of acrylic shelves and I loved that she had the edges wrapped in glowing neon!

Teens change their minds {a lot}, so removable wallpaper on the ceiling was a great call. I love the playful “Hearts Apart” pattern by Timothy Sue too!

And what teen wouldn’t go gaga over the fabulous “you only live once” neon sign?

Extending one of the built-in shelves is a brilliant way to create a space-saving desk. The back of the shelf is painted orange while it is playfully trimmed out in neon yellow.

Repeating the heart shape, Emily created a giant one on the wall with tacked up snap shots. So easy and so cute!

Do you heart this room too?
