DC Designer Liz Levin’s Kid-friendly, Stylish Home

When Washington DC-based interior designer, Liz Levin became a new mom she discovered few stylish furniture options that were kid-friendly. As a result, she founded Nesting – an all-in-one resource for contemporary, high performance furnishings specifically selected and designed with children and pets in mind. Yippee!
Liz used her own home as a laboratory and many of her furnishings are from her store’s collection. In the living room, Liz mixes design styles and balances feminine and masculine elements beautifully. The table skirt was made custom by Liz Levin Interiors in Rogers and Goffigon {cream texture} with trim fabric by Schumacher. A fun Lucite waterfall coffee table from CB2 serves as a coffee table {note the rounded corners – kid-friendly!}. Liz sells a higher end version on Liz Levin NestingThe most striking element in the room however, is the stunning wallpaper by Cole & Son  behind the dark chocolate sofa. The colorful print {Fornasetti Collection Frutto Proibito} pulls together the room’s color palette brilliantly. The remaining walls were painted in Benjamin Moore’s Manchester Tan and is a nice contrast to the dark remnant wool wilton area rug.
The Murano glass table lamp and round brass vase add just the right vintage touches and were purchased at Sixteen Fifty-Nine in DC’s Georgetown. The red, pink and white t.v. time chair {“deliciously comfortable” as Liz puts it} is covered in a cutting edge, stain-resistant upholstery fabric that uses Nano-Tex technology and adds a punch of color. Stylish and functional – love this!
Above the living room’s fireplace hangings original artwork by Barbara K. Buer. I love how Liz flanks the fireplace with highs and lows – an antique Chinese garden statue from Qi in Old Town Alexandria, VA and a sweet child’s rocking chair found at a local flea market. The fuchsia nesting chair {Hollywood 2} is also made in high performance fabric, yet has a fashion-forward look. {We need to know how she sold her hubby on the bold, feminine color choice!}

In the dining room, Liz opens up the space visually with a large custom mirror and floor length drapes in a fun brown and white geometric print. The dark wooden dining table was a passed down from a family member and looks amazing with the Design Within Reach white leather chairs Liz scored off of Craig’s List. The drum pendant lighting is by Visual Comfort and is available through the trade.
This fun and colorful space is Liz’s “catch all” room. It serves as a home office, play area and guest room so the design needed to incorporate furnishings that were functional and flowed visually. The striking red and white “Merlin” wallpaper by Albert Hadley {through Hinson/Brunchwig & Fils} was a splurge and sets a playful tone. Liz selected the sleek white Parsons desk from West Elm and paired it with an Ikea chair – both very affordable. A fun red bamboo style floor lamp from Arteriors {available through the trade} helps with needed task lighting and balances the space visually. Artwork stacked above the cherry red file cabinet are finger paintings by her daughter and set in frames from Pottery Barn. I love to see children’s art framed and showcased for all to see.
Keeping within a tight budget, Liz selected the children’s table and chairs from Ikea – can’t bet Ikea prices! Liz hung a whimsical poster that beautifully picks up a yellow and white zigzag accent pillow on the West Elm Storage Bed Frame {pull out draw provides more storage options}.
In the bedroom, Liz covers the bed in dark brown bedding by DKNY. The turquoise and white circle print accent pillows were made custom while bolsters were from West Elm. A sweet Lucite tray table from Alba Interiors Lambertville, NJ is the perfect bedside table. Framed artwork from Liz’s travels to Brazil and Hong Kong are stacked, while a larger “For Like Ever” print hangs above the bed.

Liz mixes styles and adds ethnic touches on a dresser. The vintage turquoise Chinese Foo Dog from Qi in Old Town Alexandria, VA is handsome next to the modern Paris lamp from good old, Target. The rrom’s walls were painted a soothing Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore.
In the baby’s nursery room, Liz keeps it bright and cheery with the walls painted in Farrow & Ball Hound Lemon. She placed a white classic spindle crib from Land of Nod {before many of the crib recalls of this type – please make sure if you are given a crib it has not been recalled} centered between a glider and toy bins. The sweet and sassy curvy side table in white is one of my favorites and is available at Liz Levin Nesting. It is perfect for any room in the house!

Floor length drapes in yellow with a green panel nicely frame the windows. While large, colorful stuffed animals in the green and yellow color palette add to the playfulness of the room’s decor. Liz keeps the amoire and changing table {Land of Nod} neutral white and consistent with the other furnishings in the room.

I am still drooling over the Cole & Son wallpaper in Liz’s living room? What caught your eye?

Annette Tatum ~ Interview & Book Giveaway

Recently I featured Annette Tatum’s gorgeous new bedding collection from her interior decor lines House and Little House in this post. Today I am thrilled to interview her and giveaway her new book, The Well-Dressed Home. This book is an inspiring resource that merges fashion and home decor styles. It also guides you through beautiful images how to decorate your home by embracing your fashion sense.

SB: Where did you get the inspiration for your new bedding collection? Do you have a favorite print?

Annette: I get a lot of ideas from fashion. I love the way the that industry forecasts new looks. I also have a library of architectural components such as tile patterns, iron gate designs that I source new ideas and patterns from. And then there is the one of a kind textile documents that you can find at a flea market or little store that hold a treasure of ideas to be put into print.

SB: How would you describe your personal style?

Annette: I tend to like a little of everything, but for the most part I am pretty classic. I like designs with historical references and that have stood the test of time. My own home is full of traditional design but layered in are the bohemian and vintage elements that I love. A little bit of Audrey mixed with Alexander McQueen is my favorite. The expected mixed with the unexpected.

SB: Has your personal style changed or evolved over time and how?

Annette: My lifestyle has definitely changed over the years from single girl to mother of four. So my personal style has changed from everything to what I wear to how my kitchen is laid out. Where I am in my life has such an impact on how I live. Four small kids.. easy to wear furniture and clothing.. When I was single.. much more mod and sleek. So just like my wardrobe I have stopped wearing mini skirts just like my home I no longer have such a formal dining room. I think as that as time goes on I find myself more attracted to simple yet elegant design. Both in my own personal style and my home.

SB: In your own home, what is your favorite room and why?

Annette: We have a little room off our master bedroom that is probably 8 x 8. We all love to hang out in there and watch TV or click on the computer. I just added seagrass to the walls and the book cases are a Wedgewood blue. It feels like a very cozy little English den.

SB: What trends are you seeing in your projects right now?

Annette: In my new book, The Well-Dressed Home I cover eleven different styles in home decor and fashion. I am seeing that the two are more and more blended and using that for inspiration. What ever is on the runway makes its way somehow in some form to the home decor market. Fashion adds drama and exciting to design and that trend is what I am looking at for my own line.

SB: You have been a successful interior designer, author and business woman with decor lines House and Little House. Do you enjoy one more than the other? What is next on your career agenda?

Annette: It has been quite a ride and I am often looking for ways to slow down! But recently we designed a group of one of kind dress forms for the book tour that are amazing. Dresses made out of home decor materials such as wallpaper, tile, hardware and more. They were so fun to work on and the hands on creating is what I really miss. I hope to do more of that in the future. I love the idea of ” bespoke” tailoring and think that adding more of that to the products I make is exciting.. and maybe another book! {for “The Making of the Mannequin Exhibit” go to Annette’s blog here}

Sweet Pink & Yellow Baby Girl Nursery by House of Ruby

Whimsical, chic and opulent. This darling nursery room was created by San Francisco Peninsula-based interior designer, Melodie Rubin of House of Ruby.

Starting with existing white on white polka dot window treatments, Rubin creates a bright and beautiful yellow, pink and white color palette that is not typical, but yet still feminine and shouts, “It’s a girl!” The sunshine yellow wallpaper by Nina Campbell is a nice backdrop to the nursery’s focal point and inspiration, a white Sutton Canopy Crib by Restoration Hardware. The crib with a four poster bed look converts to a toddler bed and is dressed in crib bedding custom made from Serena & Lily’s Ruby/Sunshine Mosaic Fabric.

An antique, hand painted side table handed down from a proud grandmother was placed next to the custom glider – arm chair by Patricia Edwards {available through the trade or Posh Tots}. A throw pillow by Trina Turk pulls the color scheme together nicely and mixes in a modern touch.

The exquisite round tufted ottoman is worth a closer look. Like the chair, it is covered in solid bubblegum pink and contrasting pastel pink dot fabrics both by Designers Guild {available through the trade at Osborne & Little}. The cord and trim add a touch of whimsy and are both from Fabricut.

Here’s another look at the darling ottoman. The diamond pattern area rug is made from 100 New Zealand Wool Berber and is by Masland Carpet Mills.
I love this nursery design by House of Ruby because it has range and can easily evolve into a toddler and little girl’s room. What do you love about this sweet nursery room?

Baby Bird and Spring Green Meadow Gender Neutral Nursery

Recently I had the pleasure of designing an inspiration board for a client expecting her first baby this Spring. The whole design process was done virtually {over email}. The mommy-to-be wanted help pulling together a gender neutral nursery room that wasn’t too cutesy or babyish {sorry Winnie-the-Pooh}.

Along with a completed questionnaire, my client emailed a few photos of the room and items that she would like to incorporate in the design. One item was a sweet yellow and green silk pillow with a darling silver bird. She also wanted to include a dark wood armoire, white traditional crib and a vintage chandelier she had bought at an auction. From this starting point, I created a nursery room inspired by nature and a springtime meadow. It has a beautiful shades of green, yellow and hints of gray silver. Here is a look at the main inspiration board and the list of vendors:

1. Oilo Modern Berries Crib Set available at Fawn & Forest and Polka Dot Peacock – $399; 2. Green & White Striped Curtains by Custom House Baby – price varies; 3. Benjamin Moore Celadon Green 2028-60; 4.Reversible Organizer Fabric Bin Basket by Baffin Bags (Sage Green White Damask) – $18 each; 5. Modern Meadow – Wall Pattern Vinyl Decal Sticker Art (silver or olive martini) – $62; 6. Jellybean’s Bird Watching – $15; 7. Love Birds Hand Painted Canvas – Posh Tots (green) / Framed dimensions are 24″ x 28″ – $95; 8. Bird Mobile (felt) by Eleni Creative – $80; 9. West Elm’s Pouf in Dhurrie, Platinum/Ivory Octagon Print – $199; 10. Hand-woven Shag Solo Honey White Rug (4′ x 6′) from Overstock.com – $130.99.

Patterned after the red currant berries that dot the Norwegian highlands, Oilo’s modern berry line was the first crib bedding I was drawn to for the nursery. It’s simplicity, color and modern style were elements my client was looking for.

For the room’s two large windows, I suggested floor length tab curtains in a green & white stripe. This vertical stripe would be a nice repeat of the stripe pattern in the fitted crib sheet and make the room feel taller. For the walls, the mommy-to-be wanted a wall decal. Again, I searched for something not too cutesy and found the “Modern Meadow” wall decal found on Etsy. I recommended the decal be in an accent color of silver or a darker shade of green to allow for a contrast with the suggested wall color: Benjamin Moore’s Celadon Green.

My client also had an over sized upholstered armchair she was going to convert into a gilder {love this idea!}. As a footstool or small ottoman, I suggested West Elm’s pouf in platinum & ivory octagon print. I thought with time too, this would be a fun little seat for when the baby reached toddlerhood.

A sweet felt bird mobile from Etsy store, Eleni Creative adds just a touch of whimsy to the nursery and picks up on silver and yellow accent colors beautifully. It also pulls in the bird and meadow theme without going overboard.

A 4′ X 6′ hand-woven white shag rug was selected to cover the hardwood floors and add texture to the nursery room. It was found on overstock.com for a great price – $130!

To keep baby’s toys, board books and diapering products organized, I found {also on Etsy at Baffin Bags!} this reversible bin in a chic sage green and white damask pattern.

For the walls, I suggested colorful artwork that again played on the bird and meadow theme. This one from Etsy by Jellybean called “Bird Watching” and thought it was also fun because the homeowners have several cats. I recommended hanging this print with two other prints from the same artist’s collection.

It was a delight to help my client pull together her first nursery. My client loves the bird mobile. What do you love?
