Interior Design Trend Forecast for 2011

The most extraordinary spaces are personal, inviting and evolve overtime.  Great interiors contains highs and lows, old and new and a blend of pattern and texture. They don’t look like they’ve been plucked from the most current and in demand furniture catalog. So, when asked  “What are the most important trends for 2011?”, I tried peeling away the current images of chic product ads and focused on décor elements that are timeless, innovative or making a resurgence. ELLE DECOR Designer Showhouse San Francisco: Guest Bedroom Design by Suzanne Tucker

Yesterday marked the final day of ELLE DECOR’s first-ever Designer Showhouse in San Francisco. The stately 5,000 square-foot Mediterranean mansion in the heart of the historic St. Francis Wood neighborhood was renovated from top to bottom. In addition, the interior was transformed by eleven of the San Francisco’s most talented interior designers – all of which were handpicked by ELLE DECOR.

Suzanne Tucker Elle Decor Bedroom Twin

Today I will be showing images of the serene bedroom & bathroom created by interior design icon, Suzanne Tucker. Suzanne’s award winning design firm, Tucker & Marks is one of the most recognized in the United States. Architectural Digest honored Suzanne Tucker as one of the AD100 Top Designers of the World, the Robb Report named her “The Best of the Best in Interior Design” and the list continues. In addition to designing beautiful spaces, in 2009 Suzanne authored a book, Rooms to Remember – The Classic Interiors of Suzanne Tucker and earlier this year she launched a luxurious textile line, Suzanne Tucker Home

In the ELLE DECOR Designer Showhouse, Suzanne selected a tranquil aqua palette with crisp whites, greens and yellows for the guest room retreat. The bedroom, bath and terrace are set back in the quietest upper corner of the house. “My design speaks to today’s mix in decorating – a stylish blend of casual chic, a dash of traditional, a dose of contemporary, all creating a transitional, timeless livability” said Suzanne.
The vintage beds hold special meaning to Suzanne. Originally Michael Taylor made them for San Franciscan fashion icon, Nan Kempner in 1951 because it was between graduating from College and marrying Tommy Kempner in 1952. Nan’s “step-mother” felt Suzanne should have them given her connection with Michael Taylor and that Suzanne knew Nan. So she graciously gave them to Suzanne a few months ago, right before the ELLE DECOR Showhouse opened.
Between the twin beds Suzanne placed a contemporary lacquered white bedside table by Bungalow 5. The three drawer table is topped with crisp white roses, a collection of sweet glass bottles and a ceramic table lap with scale detailing by Sue Fisher King. A small Tiffany’s blue box welcomes guests in style.

A crisp white 1940’s Parzinger dresser is positioned opposite the beds. A feminine ruffled mirror is hung center over the dresser and flanked by a pair of vintage Murano glass table lamps from DWM Maloos.

Suzanne Tucker Madeline Weinrib pillows

Luxurious crisp white, green and yellow bedding by Scheuer Linens are fresh and inviting. Suzanne tops the bed with Madeline Weinrib’s chic decorative pillows – “Celery Luce” and “Green Sunder.”

This early craftsman turned wood chair is delightful and brings more natural wood tones into the space. Suzanne pairs the chair with a fun , clear Murano glass drinks table. A series of Citrus Cotton Woven  area rug runners by Dash & Albert were combined to cover the dark hardwood flooring.
Suzanne Tucker Elle Decor Bathroom
In the bathroom Suzanne covers the walls in a cheery yellow and white Chou-Chou wallpaper by Sister Parish Design. Bath fixtures and tile are kept contemporary and sleek. Two half cylinder sconces – Calliope in polished nickel by Circa Lighting – flank the simple mirror. The sink is softened with a custom pleated skirt. The rich, dark corner shelves are an antique and made of bamboo.

Just off of the bedroom sits a lovely private terrace. The half round faux bois table by Oly Studio is placed just behind a pair of outdoor lounge chairs and ottoman by Michael Taylor Designs. The bamboo style and bronze finish contrasts beautifully with the Perrine in Leaf outdoor fabrics by Duralee. It is surrounded by white marble garden stool, hand-carved old stone Balinese basin and Chiang Mai Palace planter all from Living Green. Hmmm… I think all that is missing is a lovely cup of green tea and a book.
And just in case you missed it, here are tours of the ELLE DECOR Showhouse’s Living Room by Gary SpainTeen Girl’s Bedroom by Grant Gibson  and Master Bedroom and Bath by Jay Jeffers.
What do you like most about Suzanne Tucker’s guest room retreat?

San Francisco Indochine Style: Leslie Lundgren Design

San Francisco Peninsula-based interior designer, Leslie Lundgren worked hand-in-hand with her San Francisco client who has both French and Vietnamese ties to create a look delicately blending the two. The result is a stunning, sunlit Pacific Heights flat in a luxurious “Indochine” style. Furnishings and decorative items were either family heirlooms, picked up on travels aboard or in San Francisco’s China Town.

Lundgren used a traditional French palette of vivid yellow, jade green and coral red. Here in the living room, the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Dalila 319. Two antique Louis XV armchairs in jade green mohair are placed in front of an antique Italian desk with exquisite marquetry. Atop the desk sits a sweet antique French mantle clock. A large Louis Philippe walnut armoire makes a beautiful backdrop.

Opposite the Louis XV chairs Lundgren places loveseat sofas in a warm coral velour fabric by Clarence House. Throw pillows in an Italian “fortuny-esque” fabric adorn the sofas. The floor to ceiling drapery fabric and silk tassels were purchased at Bouchara in Paris. A Chinese red lacquer trunk is converted into a coffee table and stands over a gorgeous silk and wool Chinese art deco rug. A beautiful French 1940’s wheat motif brass floor lamp is placed in the corner next to the sofa. The focal point of the room however, a large scale Chinese ancestor painting, is a family heirloom.

In the dining-family room, a limed-oak pedestal table is surrounded by reproduction Louis XV chairs. The worldly tablescape includes an Argentinean silver pitcher, Point a La Ligne candles and a 1970’s green vase made by a family friend. A collection of blue and white Delft plates are mounted on the wall.

In the family room, Lundgren brilliantly mixes color, texture and old & new by placing a zebra rug from Cost Plus World Market at the foot of a Chinese moon face traditional red lacquer armoire.

Lundgren creates a delightful bedroom retreat with a beautiful canopy over the bed in English Chintz fabrics. Fresh sunflowers and a green Tole Lamp add just the right decor to the red bedside table.

Lundgren’s sophisticated East meets West style is evident in this design and perfect for the culturally rich city by the bay.

A Blue Moon – DUX’s Folke Ohlsson Estate Sale

My jaw hit the floor and pulse started to race when I read an email from a local estate sale company promoting a sale at the former home of Folke Ohlsson (1919 – 2003) in Atherton, California – about a 40 minute drive south from San Francisco. Here’s some background on this furniture legend and personal photos of my shopping spree.

1950’s DUX lounge chair and ottoman in original olive green wool fabric

Born and raised in Sweden, Folke Ohlsson moved to the United States in 1953 and established DUX, Inc. in San Francisco the same year. Six years later, Ohlsson moved the company to Burlingame, California. His has received world-wide acclaim for his furniture designs which are generally referred to as “Scandinavian Modern” but often get categorized as “Danish Modern” or “Danish Teak”. Ohlsson’s designs blend graceful details of traditional style with the simplicity and good proportions of contemporary style.

Ohlsson received more than 30 awards including the Triennale Exhibit in Milan and the Good Design Show of the New York Museum of Modern Art. He lead the operation that has given DUX furniture its international distinction. In addition, his timely, but timeless designs are some of the world’s most copied. A patented, knockdown armchair, has been widely copied and mass-produced by more than 100 furniture designers.

Vintage magazine article about Ohlsson and Town & Country Dux ad at the estate sale

Folke Ohlsson made a significant contribution to the widespread acceptance and tremendous popularity in the United States of modern Scandinavian furniture design. In recognition of his work, he was awarded Sweden’s Royal Order of Vasa decoration by King Gustav VI Adolf in 1964.

The Ohlsson family moved to this Atherton, California home in 1960.The home designed by architect Bill Houd reflects not only Ohlsson’s own designs, but also the designs of his friends and his taste in the decor of the time. Because he was a “saver” there were many delightful treasures at the sale. In fact I went back several times!

These are images of the Ohlsson’s living room during the estate sale. I’m sure it was never this cluttered when the Ohlsson’s were living there! The home also had several original painting by Lemort Hall, Bengt Ossler, Bonde and Leo Riez. The two oil abstract paintings – one in white and the other to the right in blues & greens – are by Sweden’s Lemont Hall.

The incredible bronze patio dining table and chairs are by Walter Lamb and were priced at $3,800. It was contructed of solid bronze tubing – all joint brazed with brass – no plating. It will never rust and doesn’t require refinishing. The chairs have white cotton cording that shows age, but adds incredible character.

The side petal table (right), also patio furiture was by Richard Schultz and was going for $600 in “as is” condition.

This lovely seaside oil painting caught my eye and is by Swedish artist, Bonde (1955) who was a family aquaintance from the 1950’s. The wooden frame and linen matte compliment the painting beautifully.

The Ohlsson’s large kitchen was packed with crystal, ceramics, flatware, serving trays and Swedish wooden ornaments. The custom Scandinavian style wooden built-in was still gorgeous even though it was cluttered by sale items.

The Ohlsson’s home had so many treasures, but one of the finest was an early 19th century Swedish case clock. It went for $950. A steal!

Another gem in the home was the round teak dining room table and chairs. They were Ohlsson’s design while at DUX. And I really wanted that table, but my bid wasn’t high enough and my husband wouldn’t let me go any higher – darn it! I did however, walk away with some beautiful cane furniture by McGuire, vintage wallpaper, mid-century decor books & DUX catalogs and some darling wooden handpainted home accessories from Sweden.

This kind of estate sale only happens once in a blue moon. I am glad we had a blue moon in California last weekend!

Also, I have more personal photos of the sale and home – do you want to see more?
