Beautiful Staircases

beautiful staircases

How darling is this painted stairwell with chic lucite handrail? It’s in a gorgeous Cape Cod home designed by Raquel Garcia and featured in Elle Decor.  The space had me thinking beautiful staircases and how they can make such powerful architectural and design statements.

In our own home which I shared on Instagram, I added decorative cement tiles and gray paint to give a small stairwell leading to our mudroom a fresh look. Dino our Sheepadoodle puppy loves it too!

To kick off the weekend, I’ve rounded-up a variety of staircases featuring runners with bold patterns, tiles with ethic touches and handrails with artistic style. You might notice one that looks familiar too – it’s another staircase in our home that I’ve talked about before. Can you pick it out?

Foyer Updates + Announcement

As you may recall, the carpet stair runner didn’t arrive in time for the big One Room Challenge reveal. I was so bummed not to have it complete, but was thrilled to have it installed just a few days before Christmas. I selected a wool carpet with an antelope pattern by Stark. It’s the perfect dose of pattern and neutral color for the space. I couldn’t be happier with the result!

Another item that was needed in the foyer (yet, that’s not as glamorous) was a rug pad for under the diamond pattern natural rug. Because rug pads can be full of glues, chemicals and off-gases, I jumped at the chance to test out an eco-friendly rug pad from Rug Pad Corner. Each rug pad is cut to order down to the inch, so it’s a perfect fit for your rug. They also provide a variety of rug pads based on type, use and floor material. For our foyer we needed a non-slip rug pad that wouldn’t damage the hardwood floors. We went with the Ultra Premium and are very pleased with it’s performance. Although it doesn’t apply in our case, the Ultra Premium rug pad can also be used over radiant heat floors – thought some of you may want to know!

Now that I have the foyer complete, it’s time to move on to the next project in our new home. There are several rooms that need a complete redesign and I’m excited to be sharing one of them with you through the One Room Challenge Spring 2016 edition! I’ve been planning away and can’t wait to share with you the space which I will be introducing next Wednesday, April 6th. Stay tuned!!!

2016 Decor Trends :: Tribal Rugs

Tribal rugs, famous for their elaborate color and artistic design, have been handcrafted and cherished for centuries. Over the past decade muted rugs in general were in big demand, however in the last year I’ve been spotting more and more rugs in bright, vivid colorways – many showcasing beautiful tribal patterns. Tribal rugs in jewel tones such as blue, red and bright pink are popping up in a variety of interiors and in every inch of the home. I’m loving the revival and was thrilled to hear that interior designer, Naomi Stein of Design Manifest is predicting these exotic textiles are continuing to trend in 2016.

Upon my return from a trip to Morocco, its become clear to me that tribal rugs are here to stay.  Typically woven by hand by nomads in Turkey and Morocco, these rugs are versatile pieces of art.  They work seamlessly in both traditional and modern spaces.  They can be used as a pop of color in a neutral space, or a compliment in saturated room.  Used in virtually every room in the house, from kitchens, to bedrooms, to living spaces, they can be a fun, cozy accent that is sure to bring some vitality to your home.  Worried about mixing other patterns with a tribal rug?  Stripes, buffalo check, mudcloth and animal print work great with these rugs! – Naomi Stein
