Favorite Kitchen Design Trends 2018

With a new year, many of us have plans to renovate or fresh-up our homes. One living space I’d recommend starting with the heart of the home, the kitchen. We recently finished our kitchen renovation and I must say, it was worth the pain. If you are considering a kitchen renovation of your home, take a look at my favorite kitchen design trends for 2018.

ONE :: DARK KITCHENS

Move over all-white kitchens – dark kitchens are in! The dark kitchen however is not a new trend in 2018, but one that’s been building momentum over the last few years and can’t be ignored. From modern to traditional, dark gray, navy and black are hues are being used on cabinetry. I love it paired with white walls like in this kitchen designed by Studio McGee.

TWO :: STATEMENT RANGES

Another trend in kitchen design are statement ranges. Elaborate hoods are being toned down, while ranges are ramping up in style. Even though there are several luxury ranges that would certainly make a statement in your kitchen, La Cornue is leading the pack. La Cornue gives you more flexibility in customizing the color and trim of their ranges with 8 colors and 3 trim options. This gourmet kitchen (spotted on Instagram) feature’s a gorgeous La Cornue range in tapestry.

THREE :: COZY KITCHENS

Open floor plans have allowed for a easy access from kitchen to living spaces, however it’s been the textiles and furnishings which help deliver a seamless flow. In the process, kitchens are now getting more inviting, approachable and cozier. Adding upholstered banquettes, throw pillows and plush area rugs in the kitchen is a trend I don’t see slowing down in 2018. FOUR :: BLACK FINISHES

FOUR :: MATTE BLACK FINISHES

As I mentioned, darker colors are making a comeback in the kitchen, but it’s not just the cabinetry. I’m specifically noticing a shift from polished finishes (brass, chrome, etc.) to matte black. From lighting to faucets; appliances to hardware, matte black finishes are trending. Loving this breakfast nook with a woven pendant in black. (image sources – first via Instagram – Lilly Gianikas and second via Studio McGee

Elements of Modern Farmhouse Style

modern farm house // H2 Design + Build

The simple, clean-lined, practical design of the modern farmhouse is appealing and trending. A wraparound porch, standing metal seam roof and industrial lighting is one quick way to spot one from the street. But, the rustic, yet refine style goes beyond the exterior. Inside plank wooden flooring and exposed reclaimed beams are often offsite by crisp white walls. In fact, the modern farmhouse color palette is typically very simple: black, white, and gray. Classic stripe and check patterns are also featured throughout the home including throw pillows, wallpaper and tile work. Other farmhouse elements often found are sliding barn doors, apron sinks and ship-lap siding. I’ve rounded up a few images of different rooms through a house that are great examples of modern farmhouse style.

Kitchen Trend :: Waterfall Countertop

neolith marble waterfall countertop // kitchen island

It’s a kitchen trend I’ve seen grow over the past few years. A waterfall countertop is a a great solution to finish off the ends of cabinets while adding a modern, decorative touch. The clean-lined look is something I was drawn to and included in my own kitchen renovation. Originally the second island was suppose to seat two to three and have storage on the opposite side. As the kitchen process evolved, I revised the plan to seat four by removing the under counter cabinetry. The island basically evolved into a parsons style table when I added the waterfall countertop in ultra durable marble patterned neolith. It’s such a heavy piece that it’s actually a movable table, not a set island. The finished piece is pictured above and posted on Instagram a few weeks back.

I’m so happy with the finished look, I wanted to share with you some of my inspiration…

In this kitchen designed by Ashley Garrison, Ashley Garrison Interiors Inc. features a center island wrapped in carrara marble – the perfect stone to contrast the warm driftwood cabinetry.

Isn’t this kitchen island stunning? The marble pattern on the turned counter really steals the show in this kitchen.

Here’s another beautiful kitchen (designed by Leslie Cotter Interiors) featuring a marble waterfall countertop used to cover the island. The marble edge is less chunky than the previous example.

This sleek kitchen island design by Liz Hand Woods balances warm wood tones with limestone waterfall countertops. So chic!

This large, square island in kitchen designed by Kelly Hinchman of Studio H Design Group allows for some serious storage. The waterfall edge countertop in all white (perhaps quartz) adds to the sleek, modern feel.

Concrete is another material that looks great wrapped around cabinets. I love it here paired with white cabinets and floors.

kitchen counter stools // round-up // @simplifiedbee

Sorry for the radio silence, but our kitchen remodel has been consuming much of my time these days. I’ve made tons of decisions regarding cabinetry design, fixtures and finishes, but still have a few up in the air. For example, I still have yet to select the counter stools for an island. I’m torn on material and design. Should I pick up brass accents to echo the pendant lighting? Add a chinoiserie touch? or go with something classic? Here are a few that have made the short list. eeny, meeny, miny, mo…
